Ok so Im not male but am writing this on behalf of my male friend :)

Hes struggling to gain weight as hes a little on the skinny side(always has been) however now hes doing alot more sport, rowing mainly hes concerned that he is losing weight. It took him 6 months to gain 7lbs and its dropped off him within a couple of weeks.
Ive trawled the internet this morning looking for advice for him and everything seems to be conflicting and alot of it is geared towards 'protein/whey shakes etc'.Which he would rather not use.

Can anyone give any advice or 'good' websites to look at please?

At 6'2" I like to stay around 170 lbs. occasionally going up as high as 175 lbs. or as low as 165 lbs. during the heat of the summer when I'm most active.

I’ve never encountered anyone healthy who had trouble gaining weight so I recommend either your boyfriend see his physician ........ or simply follow the link below – good luck [IMG]

Brown pasta makes me put on weight, and it isn't hugely unhealthy.

My advice is to not sweat the body weight issue unless he doesn't feel well... then there may be an underlying issue beyond a fast metabolism. Otherwise, just eat healthy... many small meals (four or five daily) continue with the exercise and appreciate the fact that he isn't trying to lose excess weight. The metabolism will most likely tend to slow as he gets older- having solid habits in place will help determine how he evolves with the coming years.

I am the same way although now that I'm older I find it easier to put on a few pounds. But until I hit the mid 30's I could not gain much weight at all. I would not really worry to much about it unless he is not feeling well, like Stinkfoot said probably just a high metabolism.

Well at this stage in the game he should just be happy that his metabolism has helped keep him from being overweight like so many. I'd be hesitant to advise trying to build too aggressively as the small strains and injuries that used to take a day or two to resolve will soon take a week or more if they don't already. Maybe part of the solution will involve him trying to see himself in a little more positive light...?

Assuming he's always been skinny and eats regularly and there's no major illnesses, this is not an issue. It is very, Very, VERY hard to gain weight and keep it on if your metabolism dictates otherwise. Given that he is so active, he has put his metabolism on fire. Hopefully he will have an increase in appetite before too much more melts off.

In terms of intentionally bulking up, again, it is hard. But, we have tried a coupe things:

1.) 1-2 extra meals every 24 hour period, what we call "2nd lunch" or somesuch.

2.) Go to GNC or some other health store and buy a weight gain powder - you can suck up 2000 calories in one nasty shake. Or go au natural, and makes shakes with premium ice-cream, whole mile, chocolate syrup, banana slices, etc.

I weigh 132 at the moment, this time last year i weighed around 103 to 105, and im 18. After a relationship ending because i was insecure about how i looked i decided i need to do something about it. I lift weights 2 times a week and eat 7 meals a day. The key is to eat every 2 hours. You will see improvements after a week or 2 just by doing this. I put on like 7 pounds in a week one time just from eating a lot, you just gotta get your stomach stretched out and your body used to eating a lot because when i was like 105 i would only eat like twice a day and when i did eat it was like a couple cookies or a little bowl of cereal

I dont recommend those shakes because they taste like shit and after a couple days you dont want to drink them anymore because they are just that bad.

I recommend you get this drinks called BOOST or ENSURE or things like that. one bottle has 350 calories and its a good sub for a meal, and it makes you hungry for real food after about an hour or 2 after you take it. and if you drink 2 a day thats already 700 calories, add in 4 or 5 meals with that and youre taking in a shit load of calories. So you HAVE to gain. add in some weight training to put muscle on and you will see big gains in no time.

he should go to the doctor and get tested for an overactive thyroid. If that comes back normal then he probably shouldn't worry about it, its just hard for some people to gain weight. I've always had trouble gaining weight but I've found that if I lead an active lifestyle and eat a well balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and carbs, that generally helps me maintain a healthy sheath of muscles on my body that keeps me from looking too skinny. Bulking up his muscles is probably the only way he'll be able to gain weight if his metabolism is really fast.

I remember in high school the wrestling coach made all the wrestlers eat a peanut butter and banana sandwich every day to bulk up..I dont know if that works but it couldnt hurt.
