I just had a woman come into the store talking about all this genealogy research she's done to find out where her family comes from. I think it's awesome and kind of want to do the same for my family. Have any of you ever done that before? What did you find out?
I found out that my family has lived in Georgia way to damn long. "Oooh a colony lets stay here and hope our decendants stay here forever!'
i haven't i don't want to pay someone to do it it or pay a service to do it...i'd rather do it myself, but i don't know where to start
Yup. My family has been in Pennsylvania since the late 1600's, and originally came from Scotland, and England, and I'm directly related to several Kings, including several Viking Kings from the early 700's It's still a work in progress
My father did a lot of research into our heritage. It's not especially exciting stuff. I'm not as worried about where I came from as where I'm going. He did find some interesting stories, though, but lineage wise, it is really quite boring. I'm a commoner born of commoners, and our bloodline is extremely pure with only one foreigner (Russian) in the mix over 400+ years.
I traced back one of my grandparents lines and found that they came to the states during the potato famine in Ireland in 1840-1850. I also had a great great great uncle that murdered 3 people in a bar for not serving his Indian friend. This was in Oklahoma, I also managed to get all the court tanscipts from the case. They date back to 1915. Its a tough process but it's worth it IMO
im directly related to german naval Captain Vanselow, who signed the armistice for germany at the end of WWI...im also english and scottish...norse as well...
My great aunt did a lot of research on our family. According to the records (I don't know the exact details from memory), our family (Bassett) began with a Knight who moved from London to Virginia. Burwell Bassett is a distant uncle of mine from Williamsburg, VA. He built what is now Bassett Hall in Williamsburg, which he sold to John D Rockefeller and was member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1787 to 1789 and the Virginia Senate from 1794 to 1805. His mother was Anna Maria Dandridge, and if you know colonial history, Dandridge is a well known last name - he was nephew to Martha Dandridge, or better known, Martha Washington - wife of George Washington. There is also a blood relation to William Henry Harrison. We've been in the historical Virginia area since. My mother's side of the family is strictly Cherokee. So, sometimes it can be very informative and beneficial to check out your lineage.
Daniel Boone,Abraham Lincoln's mom(and I suppose by extension,Abe himself,Admiral Dewey of the Spanish -American war.
Very direct relative of the now slain king of Poland on one side, and wondering Jews that can be traced to early Spain on the other side.
My great aunt was really into genealogy until she got Alzheimer's. I don't think I really found out anything interesting...I mean, I have a buttload of Native American in me...the tribe I'm not sure of...seeing where all my distant family lives in Oklahoma, likely Chickasaw because they live right outside of the Chickasaw Nation. And my great grandpa who married my Native American great grandma was in the KKK...go figure! As far as the other side of my family goes, though, I've not a clue.
I found out I've got ancestors who got married in Brazil, some others who met in Nigeria, and that one of mine had sixteen children. Sadly also found out that two relatives died in WW2. And one of mine held a world record in 1954.
