So within the last year I discovered and purchased 23andme and Family Finder DNA; two DNA tests that tell you about your genetics, heritage, ethnicity, disease risks, etc. I did this because I know virtually nothing about my family. 23andme you spit in a cup, FamilyFinderDNA you swab your cheek. 23andme tells you disease risks, genetic info, and heritage. FamilyFinder tells you about your ethnicity, and haplogroups (the migration path your ancestors took) Both connect you to genetic relatives! I've got a bunch of cousins!!! For example, I'm Haplogroup H and my ethnicity is Europe (Western European) Orcadian 92.89% ±0.43% Native American Columbian, Maya 7.11% ±0.43% What do you guys think?
Sounds great. It would be exciting knowing all that info. Be good conversation at the next family get together. Does it cost a lot?
I really want to do this. its so fascinating. My heritage isn't that interesting though so I'm afraid it will be a waste of money - I'm not sure if I really need to pay someone to tell me that I have no ancestry outside of England, Scotland, and Wales. Or maybe it would be a pleasant surprise to find out I actually have some exotic ancestry too.
23andme was about $200; FamilyFinderDNA was $350. It's interesting to do both since they have different information, research, and resources.
No, guys...If you're into genealogy at all you know that this is a common practice. Really, what are they going to do with your DNA anyway?
No Offence, But They Will Gladly Hand It Over To Any Law Enforcement Agency That Demands It.... Does That Answer Your Question....??? Cheers Glen.
DNA Is Like Your's And Mine's Fingerprint, Or Facial Recognition, It Is Something Uniqe And Supposedly No Two Peeps In The World Have The Same DNA. This Is The Most Valuable Tool Ever Aquired By Law Enforcment Agencies. I Have Been Told That Now In Australia When You Go For An Interview At A Police Station They Offer You A Glass Of Water, Once You Take A Sip Of That Glass Your DNA Is Then Entered Into Their Data Bank And Can Be Matched To Evidence Of Crimes Comitted 50 Years Or More Ago.... Cheers Glen.
My family has a very long and old family tree. I'm the only one to be born outside of Germany for a very long time, but it was only in Austria XD
I know all that about DNA. I'm that intelligent. I'm not a criminal so I'm not concerned about them having my fingerprints or DNA.
It's Not Just About What You Have Done In The Past, It's Also About What You Do In The Future.... If Your DNA Is Found At A Crime Scene, Even If You Were An Innocent Bystander, You Are Going To Be Asked Some Very Awkward Questions.... Cheers Glen.
Awkward questions don't scare me either. Anyway, back to the subject of genealogy. I already know so many fascinating things about my roots. The farthest line I can trace back is to 350 BC. Seleucus I Nicator, King Of Syria Your 77th great grandfather Birth 358 BC in Europus, Macedonia Death Sep 281 BC
I'm aware of the risks, but for me, I had no idea anything about my family, ethnicity, etc. And I appriciate the health information so I have a rough idea of what to expect, what my risks are, how long I'll live (apparently over 100!), etc. I've met cousins from all over the world and now I can research my heritage.
If law enforcement suspects you of a crime they can obtain your dna easily enough anyways. I don't think this really makes it any easier than it already is. Aerianne, how did you trace your line back that far? My mom traced my family back to the 1600s then she got stuck.
Exactly. I just lucked up on that particular branch and everyone had already done the work when I came across it. There are places that I'm stuck like some of my 3 x's great grandfathers coming from Ireland, or England, and that's as far as it goes.
