What are your experiences on getting hemp jewelry wet? I like to wear lots of it but I find it a pain to take it off everytime I shower and what not. Does getting it wet regularly damage it? Anything anyone can tell me about this is appreciated.
i sometimes shower with mine on and it hasnt hurt it at all. it does make it a bit softer though i think it feels better after its been wetted a few times
i've been wearing a hemp necklace nonstop for a year now. i swim with it, shower with it, get it drenched in sweat, it's fine. a bit dirty, but fine.
i think it softens it up a bit~it will change the look of it a little too(not tons)~I think it wouldn't hurt most beads but I think eventually it would hurt wood~
I can't stand wearing hemp if it hasn't been wet... it's so itchy when dry and its just so soft when it gets wet... although it takes kinda a long time to dry afterwards (kinda like dreads).
yes..i agree w/ most everyone..hemp tightens up when wet..but then takes a long time to dry..but when it does it's softer...more frayed look to it...it also changes the color of the hemp when it gets wet...none of the effects are really negative... keep it surreal ruthy
~*i used to wash hemp strands in the washer before braiding/macrame-ing them into straps for my halter tops ~ ooooooh sooooo soft... even the dryer took it to a new softer level! nothin beats a hempen neckcharm thats been worn to softness and dirtiness either... mmmmmm*~
I soak all of my jewelry now after I finish making them. If you shower with them on, you should take the time to dry them out just a little with a towel, because too much wetness and they will eventually start rotting. I've lost more frickin beads that way, when one strand will break apart at the bead and it falls off.
Thanks people! I think I'll try showering with them on from now on hehehe! THey could defininitely use some softening up.
It does damage a lille bit after a long time ye..suppose it depends how thick ur makin it tho.. i made myself lots of hemp n beady jewlery that was permanent .. it was quite rough around my neck till it got wet a few times n then it softened.. but a few things became v weak and snapped off eventually.. after a year or so tho..
i think getting it wet makes it better, they get softer and more comfortable, actually sometimes when i make a new one, ill run it under water and try and wear it out a little before i even put it on because theyre a little itchy at first.and plus i like to tie mine on with a knot so the only way its comin off is if i cut it! (so i make a new one)~peace~
hehehe my little baby Noah (Croix my other had one too but he took it off...dang toddlers) wears a hemp anklet when he bathes and swims... hes so cute!
i wear mine all the time, swimming, showering and everything. it does get nice and soft, but after a few months, it starts to smell kinda funky when it stays wet for a long time. i don't mind it, cuz it's fine once it dries, but if you're at all self conscious about funky smells, watch out for that....
Hey Bree, I had a hemp hair wrap from Medieval Fair 2001 through that September or October. (It was not tied in well) obviously I showered with it daily, and yes, it softened, and I saw a bit of "felting" but overall the water did not do it much harm.
hemps best after its wet! its not itchy, has character and gets a softer color, if you're using colored hemp, which i think is pretty cool...
a few of my really phatty hemp stuff (and i mean really thick) ended up getting moldy on the inside... and one with a weighty bead got weak and broke after a long while... but thats about it. besidesits just hemp- keep the bead(s), and when it breaks (after a long time) just make a new one!!
i was SUCH a hippie when i was 15-16... i just found a picture of me at my nephew's third birthday- just about a year ago now... and i am DECKED OUT (like a friggin christmas tree is with tinsel,) with hemp. and i stopped wearing hemp when all of my jewelry fell off. cuz i wore it swimming, showering too much and the clasps just tore away, and i like making things for other people rather than for myself anymore...
Mine gets a bit funky after a while. Sweat, humidity, water, etc. I usually put a drop or 2 of patchouli oil on the stinky jewelry and then it smells REALLY good! I have made about 7 necklaces for my brother, all with the same bead and super thick hemp. He sweats like CRAZY and they seem to only last him about 4 months before they are just to funky. He is NOT about to wear patchouli either. So, i just say go for it... become one with your jewelry peace barefootnikki
To all of those who say their hemp starts smelling funky, what about putting it in the washing machine with a load of laundry? It can be washed, can't it?
