What do you think the difference is -- or even if there is one -- between being "girly" and being "feminine"?

    Bright Blessings!

"girlie" sounds like it giggles, "feminine" sounds whispery.

Girly is childish. Hence the term, "girl".

girly is just pink tops and skirts to me, immaturity, indecision, stupidity, britney spears

I like Gina's answer too lol

To me girly doesn't seem half as classy. To me girly is like Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen and feminine is Angelina Jolie---see the difference?

I can't naturally define girly, because I've honestly never been much of a "girly-girl" ...but to me, I can easily define what I feel is feminine--
Feminine to me, is a woman who just has this complete *aura* of strength to her...a sort of confidence, but not an ego-- a classy, but strong approach, and a sort of womanly delicacy to her, but at the same time... really powerful. It seems like a heap of contradictions, but to me thats what feminine is.

What painters during the renassiance [sp?] era portrayed women as..is extremely feminine to me. Comfortable in their nude bodies, no matter the size or shape; nurturing, wholesome but natural, and having a sort of elegance to them. The only issue I have with that is... I think being feminine requires a lot of personal strength and being comfortable stating opinions etc... which you can find a lot more of in women today.

Girly is fake and pretentious, almost like a man in drag. Feminine is something you are without trying and without "props" like sexy clothing or plastic surgery or too much make up or spending too much time on your appearance.

I've been told I am very feminine. Yet I rarely wear makeup, have no problem once in a while leaving the house with leg stubble, don't wear sexy clothes or jewelry. It is being comfortable with your sexuality and loving your being a womyn.

I gotta diagree with you about Angelina. She is too mentally unstable to really be "feminine" IMO, and she plays up her "I'm sexy and I like to fuck." attitude. But you are right about Mary Kate and Ashley. Paragons of girly.

i've always wondered...is she "playing up" her sexuality, or is it just incredible essential to who she is as a person? i've wondered this since i was hanging out with a couple friends of mine. after a while, i realized that they just can't help being that way. it's not like they're abused or unloved.

JMO, but I think Angelina is seriously mentally disturbed. Yes, I think she plays up the whole "I'm so sexy." thing. I think she needs attention, or she thinks she can't live. She threatened to do unspeakable things to Billy Bob Thornton when they broke up. Very ill things. I can understand being upset, but if you had your shit together, you wouldn't share these things with the press. Again, this is just my opinion of her.

I think she is a sad, sad womyn. I don't understand people's obsession with her. Just a difference of opinion, I guess. It takes all kinds.

    :)

Girly can be either fake and pretentious or just goofy fun. Girly is all about the clothes and make-up and perfect hair cut, color, and style. Which, if done on occasion for the hell of it, can be a lot of fun, and I see nothing wrong with it. Being in an academic field that is predominantly female, but the type of women who prefer to go out and dig in the dirt (those wacky archaeologists, one of the subfields of anthropology) and are rarely seen wearing anything but jeans or cargo pants/shorts, we've actually started a tradition of having a "girly party" once a semester. We play with makeup, do our hair, etc., all that silly crap that we normally don't have time for.

On the other hand, if you can't walk out the front door without spending 2 hours on hair and makeup, if you judge people by which designer they're wearing this season, that's bad girly!

Either way, girly is something on the outside. Feminine is what is below that (hopefully!). Feminine is that natural beauty that we all have when we allow it to show -- the curve of the hips, the soft skin, etc. It's also that quality that I can't quite describe... It's that inner strength and confidence that people have mentioned, but but there's more to it to distinguish it from a masculine aura of strength and confidence... Mystery is somehow involved too... Even down to the superfucial, where girly girl outfits don't tend to leave much to the imagination while feminine outfits lightly fall over the right curves, hinting at what is there, without clinging to every curve...

i'm a feminine woman/wife/mother/sister/friend who greatly enjoys putting on something girly from time to time. i also enjoy seeing frilly girly bookmarks and and pink ribbons on kittens. it takes me back in my mind to a happy, more oblivious and naive time in my childhood.

yes a lot of people think that of Angelina, but for some reason... I just love her and cant get enough of her...i suppose there IS something about her craziness that i find sexy.

shes so different and unique from most hollywood woman and i love that.

not to mention, i want to hump her leg.

Okay, I must admit that I am somewhat offended by some of the responses here! Is it so wrong to enjoy being female, to put on a little make-up, paint your nails, and sport baby smooth legs that your husband marvels at? Is it so wrong to wear classy sexy, not trashy sexy, looking clothes occasionally to make yourself feel good, and get some double-takes when you're out? I myself do those things not to be fake, but simply for enjoyment. It makes me feel good, it makes me feel super feminine. I am not one who spends a ton of time and money on my appearance, yet I also feel that I totally enjoy being female and the fun things we get to do because of it!

I just returned from a week-long trip on an island with my husband and my kids. We stayed in a beautiful house on the beach. I lived in my bathing suit and sunscreen the whole week. I felt like a goddess. I didn't feel obligated to doll myself up because I felt sexy being completely natural. But, I also enjoy getting dolled up too. I think it's fun and a mood booster.

So, maybe I am a bit of girly-girl as well as feminine. But I'm proud of it. :)

no one said it was bad to do all those things...
to me its feminine if you can do all those things but ALSO let it go and be natural and feel great about yourself. :)

which you said, and thats great and i give you props.

i think thats the point of being feminine... to be able to be very versatile like that. to be able to put on makeup, but also be able to go without it... to be a nurturer, but also love to just relax and not worry about shit...

i know many girls who will not dare step foot out of their house without makeup on... to me, if youre that insecure, it doesnt seem feminine. thats just my opinion, and its not meant to offend

I used to be one those who wouldn't step foot out of the house without make-up on I must admit. Thankfully, I've changed that, and feel more secure with myself naturally. Even when I am wearing make-up, I think of it as an expression, as art. That probably sounds silly, but I feel like my face is the canvas, and I'm artistically expressing myself in a mild manner. If that makes any sense. ;)

oh no, totally makes sense, im the same way

i barely ever wear make up...but when i do,i like to get creative with it...mix colors, try different things...its fun!

i take advantage of the fact that women can wear makeup without being ridiculed like most men would be... but i dont often. I actually think my face looks...and feels better without it.

Although Im guilty of wearing a lot of makeup when I get zits...lol. Zits make me angry
