Firstly, I am an atheist. That being said I came up with an argument against theism that starts from the assumption that there is a god. Philosophy isn't my strong point so I apologize for the unrefined nature of this argument but here it is: -God created us and our capacities to reason. -Reason is fairly complicated and fairly useful so in having granted us reason it is fair to assume that god intended us to use our ability to reason. -When there are no conclusive arguments for or against something the most reasonable response is to remain agnostic for the time being. -There are currently not any conclusive arguments for or against god's existence. -Therefor god wants us to remain agnostic about his, her, its existence. I know it's kind of silly, but I think there is a real argument here. I was compelled to create this argument because I've always thought (since I was 12 years old) that if there were an all powerful all knowing being that it would not eternally punish those who refused to believe in it. So now I have tried to turn the problem on its head and say not only would god not punish non-believers, but that god actually doesn't want us to believe in it. Thoughts?
I agree. When someone tells me there's a God, to me it just emphasizes the fact there is no god to speak for himself. Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk
Saint Justin Martyr went further and said that an atheist who is guided by reason is a true Christian. I don't know whether you find that offensive or not.
God, the Devil, what's the difference? From the book of Job, God was realized as never in good faith chastising us save as the Devil; then He wants us to take faith into account as futile for we will lose. The purpose of God was to be fruitful and trusting in Goodness. We trust in love for a created form of our own; and the book of Deutoronomy says we believe in God that way; not by jealousy but by temporal humility in the expectation for new, yes, Freedom to love.
The word does believe in itself by itself for the other self, but never for itself. Thanks for the response.
If I was god, I sure as hell wouldn't want anyone believing in me. It makes you feel like you're not so special.. that you're just created on the whim of a mystical sky daddy instead of being a part of the bigger universe around you... In the words of Carl Sagan "We are a way for the universe to know itself." So, the very slim chance of this piece of matter I call my body becoming a self reproducing chemical process we call life, and growing to the form of sentience, that means something to me. All life is connected, we're all relatives, brothers and sisters. We are part of a massive family on the earth, made up of its elements, forged by a process much like science itself, life. And it's ok! If there WERE a God, he'd be telling me the things I do are wrong. If there WEREN'T a God, I would come up with those things all on my own, and therefor prove that humanity is kind, beautiful and wonderful. If there WERE a God, everyone would wait judgement in hell for all eternity, so whatever you do on the earth is left up for "God" to decide. If there WEREN'T a God you would judge yourself, and hopefully choose to be a good person. The fact that there isn't a God tells me that the human race is capable of incredible and wondrous things, just as well as terrific and horrendous things... I don't have to ask God why he let people die, I can say. "I will not let them die", or "let's learn from our mistakes", I can stop asking for help, and actually help myself and others.
But God talks to people all the time... When he wants dirty deeds done for free. Cross your fingers he doesn't speak to you one day.
If there is a God, then I don't believe God cares if we believe or not on some level. God seems so synonymous with intelligence, I don't think you'd be able to separate God from human beings anyway. Because knowing what it's like to be a human is something only humans know...if God lacks that information and human beings have it...
I think the answer to this question is different if you are for monogamy than if you are for polygamy. The reason I say this is because Monogamous couples tend to be more corrupt for all the faith we show for the higher being. On the other hand, assuming God does or doesn't exist (decisively) , then what desire one has for the trouble of fidelity being private or public (I think) commits the want for the faith to be various for each and all. God's existence will depend on Morals to me anyhow. Previous answers, not withstanding, I renounce the devil. God overcomes the devil for the failures he has for losing our morals in relationships.
god told buddah not to mention there was a god. god told lao tsu not to make a big deal about it, but to remind people who did that nothing they believe is likely to have anything to do with it. the ego western religions attribute to their idea of a god, is a reflection of the insecurity priests and preachers. as for god itself, only god itself truly knows.
"I" feel good; I knew that I wouldn't. "To you I was just an ornament." But without the Ego, I question possessing for the desire.
I mimic Blissfullyawareofitall. "God" gets in the the way for a lot of people. If "God" did exist then he'd be pretty fuckin' pissed off in my opinion. How many pointless wars, massacres, and crimes have been committed in the name of "God"... If people just stop shoving the idea of "God" down everyone's throat and realise they have a conscience of their own, the world would be a much better place. Although, it is a very personal thing.. My mom for example, she said she feels lonely without it. She likes having the comfort of knowing that if she's good she'll be sent to heaven and get to spend eternity in a perfect place with all her loved ones.
the god i believe in is perfectly capable of not wanting us to believe in most if not all of what any belief pretends to know about it. it is possible that we are not capable of knowing whether this is the case. one of god's choosen messangers was the buddah, who said nothing about there being any sort of god. and every one of these messangers, the big ones that come along once every thousand years, give or take a few hundred, supposedly told us what that same god told them to tell us. of course most of them did mention some kind of a god or 'gods', but that may be neither here nor there too.
op youur argument is immaculate, and i'm glad there are people like you out there.i think if there was an omnipotent god, seeing all the trouble religion has caused because of all the disagreeing about what he wants, that he'd poke his head in every couple hundred years and remind us what he actually wanted to prevent all that stupidity
oh and i'd like to put out there i'm not sure if i'm an athiest,i'm more or less egnostic i suppose because i sometimes feel there may be a god out there,i just highly doubt his existance.i do know if there is one it's not one of religion,or divinity, but more or less is the material our souls and all phisical things are made of,and is what connects them all. but i often doubt the existance of souls because those feelings are more than likely chemical reactions in the brain.
