I think that full-blown gease cars will stay a minority for a good while yet.
THe govenrments have options for reclaiming the raod part of gas tax, probably in plate costs or a sticker (which theoretically could exempt the vehicle from emissions tests).
And I don't have a problem with that.
I'd like to see the source on "illegal to run on grease" please post a link!

for those who want to brew their own, start here:

the first "bio" diesel was patented in 1893 and expoed in 1900 by a German engineer, Rudolf Diesel. It ran on peanut oil. the original thought was to allow farmers a fuel source they could make.
so, if it's a scam, it is that the petro companies developed a way to take over the tech. BUT given the urbanization trends, the move was logical for the time. THe need was a way to make streets "cleaner" but they were thinking of manure!

I so wish I had $3000 for the biodiesel processor. I need to really start saving money. If we can find a gas station that sells biodiesel how much do they charge per gallon? What gas chains sell this? I can buy a used diesel ran car, but i can't afford both the car and the processor.

Bio-diesel is available in various blends and more & more gas stations are starting to carry it. This site is very helpful & has a map of stations that sell it: http://www.biodiesel.org/buyingbiodiesel/retailfuelingsites/

I read about it being illegal to run off of grease on the greasecar.com forums. I'm not sure if it's actually enforced, but since used veggie oil isn't considered a fuel by the law, it is technically not authorized to be burned in an engine. Or so I've heard... don't think anyone has actually gotten busted doing it.

Bumble, you do have to filter the oil before putting it in your veg fuel tank (which is usually a separate tank from the diesel since you need to start & end on diesel or bio-diesel to warm up the veg oil). You can use white "sock" filters which come in different grades (start with a larger one and then keep filtering down to a smaller grade), or you can get an electric pump and use filters made for water & attach to the pump with tubes. I'm not too sure what we use since my boyfriend ordered all the stuff, but you can see a picture of our filter system and lots of other useful info on the blog I started about our greasecar: http://meganpru.wordpress.com/

We bought a large plastic storage bin to keep our filtered oil in. We use "cubies" - the containers veg oil comes in - to collect it and then let those sit for a while so that the animal fat & hydrogenated oil sinks to the bottom (you DON'T wand to use that nasty stuff) - use what's on top, filter it, and off you go, smelling like french fries. :)

We have a greasecar conversion kit (www.greasecar.com) but I've heard good things about Frybrid systems as well, and they're a bit more advanced (http://www.frybrid.com/) - well worth the extra expense if you can afford it.

Now, if we had a garage and it wasn't snowy, we could actually work on the grease bus and get it running again, but otherwise it looks like we may be waiting until spring to take another grease-powered trip. :(
