    As I've tried to warn before, Google is spying on you. But they're not doing it for their own benefit, but for the National Security Agency (NSA), and exactly what personal information is being passed on to the NSA is secret.

    The advocacy group, Consumer Watchdog, has called for a congressional investigation of the close ties between Google and the NSA, as well as the company's use of a NASA airfield in California. In April, Consumer Watchdog officials called for the U.S. Department of Justice to break up Google.

    Google has come under fire around the world for its "Street View" activities that record images, video and wireless data in cities and towns. Several countries have launched investigations into that practice, which would seem to have many uses not only for Google but for the super secret NSA spy agency.

    By getting a private company to do their work for them, the NSA obviates the need for Congressional oversight of this activity. It allows Google to pretend that they are just collecting information for public use like their satellite imagery and street view.

    But in reality, Google and the NSA are amassing the largest database of human information ever assembled. In addition they are spying on individual internet activity, with google's help, since google (esp if you have their toolbar or are enrolled in any of their services) can monitor nearly every website you visit.

    I wouldn't be surprised if with Google's help the NSA can insert all sorts of spyware on your computer if you've raised any flags with them due to web activity.

    Who knows they may place spyware and worse on any computer without our knowledge. This makes sense cause in the next big Cyberwar, the US may need every available computer to defend itself. Imagine, just like in time of war the military may commandeer your house. Since that is allowed, commandeering your computer in the service of national defense would be a no-brainer.

    So these are just the tip-of-the-iceberg of what is happening as personal privacy in America (and the world) fades into just a memory.

    As as long as we allow this to continue, we will face every greater scrutiny of our activities, online and offline. Systems will become more automated and will target innocent people who just happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, or dozens of other ways.

    This is the INVISIBLE FACE OF FASCISM people. And unless we confront it, and deal with it, it will haunt us the rest of our lives....

    I'm pretty glad I live in a private neighborhood, then. Google Street View stops at the turnoff into our neighborhood. Even the aerial view on Google Maps is blurry. And the spyware thing is a damn good reason to educate yourself on your computer, on what's supposed to be there and what is not. It blows my mind how many people just click on whatever they can and then are completely dumbfounded when their system locks down.

    For those that missed it, this translates to Microsoft censoring the internet through Internet Explorer... But hey, Consumer Watchdog is all for it.

    Right off the bat, any company that says they are for protecting consumers, that works with Microsoft, is full of shit...

    Now, I'm not saying Google is not working with the NSA to collect info... I don't know, and NONE of the things I've read today prove anything...

    The stories are all innuendo and heresay...

    But hey.... They'll take down google and leave us all protected by upstanding companies like Microsoft...

    Google maps are taken from satellites, that are not exclusive to them. The information they show on google maps, is the same info that the other mapping companies have and use.

    The whole thing with google collecting wireless info and such...

    IF YOU HAVE A COMPUTER THAT IS EVER HOOKED TO THE INTERNET, YOU HAVE NO PRIVACY.

    That has nothing to do with google, that is the nature of the internet.

    Nice try Tom, taking out of context some quotes about Consumer Watchdog, and then BELITTLING their attempts to protect consumer privacy.

    You didn't include this quote:
    Of course the Consumer Watchdog must work with Microsoft if there is to more privacy against those who would use Microsoft software to get into your computer and spy on you. Thank GOD for the Consumer Watchdog and other consumer advocacy groups otherwise we'd all be slaving in labor camps for the Multinational Corporate Imperialists by now. Oh wait, that's what the US prison system is all about.

    But hey, nice try.

    As for the Of course they must work with Microsoft... Thats hilarious man...

    You rant constantly about multinational compnies taking over the world and screwing us all, and then turn around and support one of the largest and most pervasive corporations there are.

    You know how you avoid google?

    Not logging on the internet...

    You know how you avoid Microsoft?

    Oh, thats damn near impossible unless you dont touch a computer...

    I had two cops bully their way into my house, then watched them tear the place apart because our neighbors told them we were drug dealers. I lost the illusion of "privacy" in 2007. I know firsthand that it's out of control. But at least you can't see my overgrown yard on Google.

    Yet... They haven't finished with their street view, and now they have much higher resolution VIDEO CAMERAS for street view, so they're going to REDO all the areas they went thru with VIDEO this time, and hit those areas they've missed...

    Unless you're living in a gated community, I don't think you'll be able to keep out the spies.

    That has nothing to do with the google vans though, or even google as of yet... They don't have high res shots of your place, simply because they haven't got around to incorporating them yet or are waiting for one of the satellite mappers to do a pass over your place.

    To be clear about something... I have no doubt that google is violating our privacy.

    I just don't think it is any different then ANY other corporation that is involved with the net, and I definitely don't agree with ANY company that only targets one competitor in a field where they are ALL doing the same thing.

    I'm glad to see someone else that's involved in the the "fight".

    What you do is edit your host file to block google. It's far from perfect but it goes a long way to helping stop the problem.

    What it does ...
    The Hosts file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. This file is loaded into memory (cache) at startup, then Windows checks the Hosts file before it queries any DNS servers, which enables it to override addresses in the DNS. This prevents access to the listed sites by redirecting any connection attempts back to the local (your) machine. Another feature of the HOSTS file is its ability to block other applications from connecting to the Internet, providing the entry exists.

    You can use a HOSTS file to block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and even most hijackers. This is accomplished by blocking the connection(s) that supplies these little gems.

    Example - the following entry 127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net blocks all files supplied by that DoubleClick Server to the web page you are viewing. This also prevents the server from tracking your movements.

    Too bad you missed the whole thrust of the article, Tom. It's all about the COZY RELATIONSHIP between Google and the US gov't. Way cozier than with Microsoft.

    How would the US gov't EVER come after Google and try to further regulate it when it is the gov't itself that is asking Google to do these things?

    Meanwhile gov'ts all over the world are suing Microsoft for stifling competition.

    That is a WHOLE WORLD OF DIFFERENCE between trying to be more competitive and PURPOSELY SPYING ON AMERICAN CITIZENS without their knowledge or approval, but with secret contracts with gov't agencies, who are getting around their own regulations with this setup.

    I've stated in the past that I believe Microsoft has been ORDERED by the Feds to include a backdoor in their operating system to allow gov't spying. Perhaps this is one of the things that concerns Consumer Watchdog. Microsoft has already enabled this kind of spying, and that's why Consumer Watchdog is "working" with Microsoft to plug those holes that allow tracking and spying.

    If the FULL truth of gov't and corporate spying on us were known by all, I think the Internet would be finished for consumers.

    If you're for BIG GOVERNMENT and gov't intrusion into our private lives, then you love this. If not then you should DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT...

    I seem to remember a post a while back by someone about how Hipforums was now (at the time) going to be indexing the site.

    Now... who was that that has let google index the site in order to get more exposure to the site?

    Micorsoft - propriety software that makes it harder for anyone not microsoft to get involved in computers...

    Google - open source software that anyone can use and modify...



    Microsoft - put contracts into place saying that their customers couldn't weren't allowed to deal with other OS companies...

    Google - makes it easy for other companies to compete with it.

    Do I think google has evil practices... YES

    Do I think they are any more evil then a company like microsoft?

    Since the first day of this site, it was indexed by google. Every day this site has been running, google has been indexing it. Are you that naive, Tom or what?

    And I suggest you keep to the subject. The subject of this thread is NOT the Hip Forums, got it?

    Nor is it about Microsoft. It's about GOOGLE.
