What do you think is great and perhaps unique to Britain and why? This is a spearhead campaign so not only can us English take a bit of pride in our own country but europeans may like to find out what we English enjoy so they can get some idea. Perhaps they may want to move here eventually. Keep it cool All foreigners welcome.
I must be honest, but compared to alot of other 'Western' countries, I believe Britain is probably one of the most liberal. Our society comes together in the worst, and best of times.
I like the diversity of Britain. I like being able to walk down a high street and buy food from anywhere in the world. So much of what we think of as British has been adapted from other cultures. Chicken Tikka Massala is the nation's favourite dish, and is a fusion of British tastes and Indian cuisine. Even fish and chips were brought over by European Jewish immigrants. In my local town of about 10,000 people there are Chinese, Thai and Indian restaurants, Kebab shops, fish and chip shops, Italian restaurants and more. And this is in one of the whitest areas in the country. Compare this with towns of over four times the size in Italy and all you can find is pizza and pasta. That, I think, makes Britain great....
now that a hard one for just one page but i remeber i think it was the queen 50 year of being on the thrown about 2001 and there was that fly past over london the red arrows concord an old lancaster boomer a few other thing all the flags were out that was a proper day i rememeber thinking best country in the world
Golden Jubilee was in 2002. The Queen was born 1952 so it was an anniversary. On the day I shook hands with Prince Charles, the two boys Harry and the other one. I remember that day too and the best moment was the carnival. Then there was the parade which showed us our past. I remember also watching on tv the day before, Brian May or some guy playing the National anthem on top of her house. Walked down to the Mall by foot from Lewisham. Crashed out at Oval, found a ticket and got on the midnight train service to Charing Cross. Took my Welsh flag too.
I like some of the rare species of birds. For instance some dove that was made extinct thirty years ago is soon going to be a common sight once they are released. As for humour, we don't have humour, just come backs.
Diversity, freedom of speech (even though i've seen brits complain they don't have much ... it is more than we tend to have in america where the right of freedom of speech is in the consitution), lack of stringent censorship, sense of humor, and great cups of tea. ;-)
we have Giant hogweed. No one else has it. Funky plant. Watch out for these plants, their poisonous sap can sensitise the skin. Fortunately no one else has to put up with them. Apparently these things are going to disrupt the Olympic game development as you cant simply get rid of them. so for plantlife, foliage, we have strong, won't budge plants who take a kind view of our native soil. Apart from soil, we have more different types of rocks than Europe.a vast library of minerals, emerald, gems, crystal etc. If the rock biter came to England, he would think it was heaven.
is that the pic you have in your sig? is that a Giant hogweed? If so, in America we call that Queen Anne's Lace, and as a kid i was super allergic. Speaking of nature... the overall landscape (minus the random fly-tipping site) is absolutely stunning in England. driving back home from London from the airport after coming back here it always reminds me of a unique patchwork quilt. the landscape seems to be as diverse as the people. and i love the look of the gourgeous yellow fields of flowers (even though the flowers smell like poo) in the summer.
Oh, that is a Giant hogweed that I have in my signature. I have personalised it. I called it Randy Mcdude. He is not as hairy as his friends. He is a Land Giant Hogweed. i think he is pretty harmless. Though the water loiterers are hairy and sting. You should see Rommney marsh. It is so diverse from anywhere in the uk. but britain is a dramatically diverse country. Giant Hogweed is related to the carrot family for some reason. Cow parsley is another variation but they are all related. Big family. I would say this one was the Don. The grandfather of them all. Apparently Genesis has a song dedicated to it. Wouldn't believe it but in London we have parroceats or parrots in south london. They are a rare sight but apparently they did the great escape from their captors.
Richmond Park has a fair few breeding parrots now, and apparently there are some further up north as well. My ex-rabbit used to love hogweed.
Hogweed stings so be careful.Though my pet Randy Mcdude, the hogweed in my signature is pretty harmless as he is a land hogweed. Notice that he isn't hairy. England is great because we have football that is far better than American football, spanish football or Australian rules football. plus we got olympics in 2012 so this makes us great.
queen anne's lace is a close relative to giant hogweed but not the same plant... queen anne's lace is actually carrots gone wild that have escaped from the garden or as some consider, carrots before they were domesticated, and if you should ever pluck up a root and break it in half, you will smell that distinctive pungent aroma of carrots while you may be allergic to queen anne's lace as well, most everyone will have a severe allergic reaction to giant hogweed as the plant is quite toxic peace and higher consciousness, yea hippies
back to the subject of the thread, i love spotted dick and bloody veggie burgers peace and higher consciousness, yea hippies
