So what is up with the Greatful Dead Bears?

 

Many people wear shirts with the bears without knowing about the Greatful Dead....which is annoying to me.

 

What does the grateful dead bear look like? I think I know which one your talking about but Im too lazy to look it up

Who are the Greatful Dead?

These obnoxious, queer looking things:

 

It looks like the bear on the sign: Great Bear Automotive.

Looks like he had a beard or a napkin tucked undr his chin.

Its a representation of an Asian, Sun Bear, a species with light colored hair on the neck and chest giving the appearance of a beard;

 

They're cute, that's what's up with them.

 

They were originally a reference to "Bear" aka Owsley Stanley, hence the name of the lp, "Bear's Choice" (back cover pic, above), which is his pick of tracks.

 

Whats not up with the deadie bears?

 

The bears were designed by Owsley, the chemist.

 

The bears were originally designed by Bob Thomas, who did the album cover art for "Bear's Choice". The bear is inspirationally based on a generic bear from 36pt lead slug that was a standard figure in a printers font box.
