Since I've only been out of the southeast US once in my life, I'm just wondering if everything I've ever heard about non-southerners and grits.

I've always heard from northerners and southerners who go north that most people in northern stateshave never eaten or even heard of grits. The ones who do eat them cover them in sugar.....this is a sin against nature.

The only time I've ever been up north was when I was 12 to visit my stepfather's family in wisconsin. Those people claimed to not have ever heard of them, but I don't know, they might have been fucking with me. My mother had a hard time trying to find some in the grocery stores there, and the ones she did manage to find were nasty....it was like eating ass funk in a bowl.

Anyway, it's been 15 years, things change, so I'm just wondering how many of you know what grits are, if you've ever eaten them, blah blah blah.....

I'm northern, and Ive never had grits... in grits form that is. Ive had polenta which IS grits... its just formed into a patty/log, and browned. i love polenta, especially with red tomato sauce.

I'm sure i would love grits too though, Ive just never made it. the store i work at sells the ground cornmeal, so maybe i should try it sometime.

I have no idea what scrabble is. It sounds like its got meat in it though just from what you guys say, so in that case I guess I'll never know.

And, I don't think grits and cornmeal is the same thing....unless cornmeal is different up there from down here, too. :p cornmeal is alot finer, I've only ever used it for breading things.

Maybe I should send out packets of quaker instant grits to everyone, and then you can tell me if there's a difference.....and i swear, I won't poison them!

Scrapple is ground meat molded then sliced and fried on a griddle. Probably one of the worst smells is passing one of the factories in summer.

    mmmm, makno flavored....

so then, this scrapple thing isn't much more than a burger, right? blegh.

and mamaKCita, I used to mix up my eggs and grits like that too....and scoop it up with a thick strip of peppered bacon, those were the days.

No more bacon for me though, and one day soon there will be no more eggs. It's almost a little sad.....

Idk... I might have been talking about hog maw, which is made of the pigs stomach and REALLY REALLY yummy. :D

Scrapple is made of like pigs feet and bones and pretty much all the scraps of the pig that people don't usually eat.... it's all ground together and the tradition started back in days when food was scarce and people didn't wanna waste ANY of the pig. Bleh.

Scrapple is pork scraps, all the trash parts. Most people eat it with catsup or chili sauce. As for grits, I never heard of them until I went south and I do like them w/out sugar.
