In my opinion it would have to be the Doors without a doubt.

Maybe an actual psychedelic band. Jefferson Airplane, Cream,13th Floor Elevators
but Hendrix was a good answer as well. The Doors are ok, but I dont think of them as groundbreaking or anything.

Jefferson airplane was a great band but a groundbreaking one I dont know. And the doors are most definitely a psychedellic band and one of the greatest. They did mix it with a poetry type sound also but mainly psychedellic. They were trippin almost every time they played live, c'mon.

They would have been if king krimson was'nt around. King Krimson pretty much had the whole psych-prog thing going.

Jesus christ man Beatles not beeing groundbraking... they influenced and will continue to influence millions till there is existing life !!
But my choice if definitely Led Zeppelin, even though they are not too wel known for there psychedellic stuff there is a lot, mostly only great Led fans will know !! Led has a lot of influence over Blues Traveler... that means a lot to me

Cream wasn't even making psychedelic rock before Disraeli Gears in '67; Fresh Cream was a blues album. Hendrix didn't come around until '67, and the same goes for the Doors. And as far as Led Zeppelin goes... no. So the only answers here that really make sense are the Beatles and the 13th Floor Elevators. The Beatles were experimenting with psychedelia as early as '65, and Revolver contains clearly psychedelic songs. The Elevators released their full-blown psychedelic masterpiece in '66, so they too were ahead of most everyone else.
