well ive decided that i wanna try to play the guitar, ive been playing the drums since i was 10, and i wanna try something new so i had a few questions WHat is a decent grade, somewhat inexpensive guitar brand, i was thinking fender, their prices seem reasonable and ive heard general good things about it. also i was just wondering if u guitar players personally thought the guitar was hard to pick up, i have a natural talent for drums and was considered to be an "advanced" drum only after the first few months of me starting to play, i know eveyrthing takes practice to get better at but i mean is guitar something u have to spend years and years at to get good? or do some people just pick it up naturally and is relatively easy to play? thanks for ur help and any other info would be appreciated also
Jet, A lot depends on what style you're interested in learning to play. Considering there are hundreds of styles from Spanish to Death Metal. If you're thinking of fender i assume you want to buy an electric. Fender does make some qaulity electric guitars, no doubt there, and they're also pretty cheap usually. See if you can get a Mexican Strat, they make em south of the border with cheap labor so you get a good deal, and they sound just as good as the regular stratocaster...so thats a good call unless you have problems with foreign exploitive labor practices, but i'm pretty sure you don't give a damn If you're getting an electric i assume you want to learn basic stuff like hendrix, the beatles, steavie ray vaughn, blues guys like that. In my experience, its very important to study the blues, and how its played, and this can be the basis for whatever other styles you learn later on. Learn the chords E, A, and B7 first. These are the three standard blues chords. At some point you'll Nashville Numbering and all that good shit as well. There are a surprising ammount of resources on-line as far as learning chords. Just be very very very persistant, and practice. If you have good rhythm skills from playing drums, you should develop pretty quickly, but don't bet on being "Advanced" for quite a few years. My first guitar was an Ibanez Gio. its and inexpensive guitar that has lasted me a few years. It sounds great and its cheap so it wont be that big of a deal if you try it and give it up. if you know your going to play alot just get and Fender Strat, you can never go wrong with that.
well i am into pop punk, aka blink 182, sum 41, green day etc... ya i wanna get a electric guitar but chances are my dad will only let me get an accoustic to start so he doesnt spend all that money then i decide i dont like it, which is perfectly fine in my opinion i wouldnt wanna do that, but anyways wat would be a good accoustic brand? or is fender also a good accoustic brand?
Well electrics aren't actually more expensive, in fact they're usually cheaper, and you can get a small amp for like $40...but anyway... If you really like fender, they also make decent acoustics. However, if you just want a decent acoustic guitar to start off with, and not spend more that $150, i suggest you go on e-bay, i've bought three or four guitars off of there to give to friends who were starting off. All were brand new, and none were more than $90 including shipping. Most are shitty, so you have to be careful, and considering you don't know much about guitars, you might get ripped off. You could find a "Music-go-round" in your city, its a used music store, many guitars sound better used anyway. Just go to some stores, strum the guitar a little bit, look at its craftsmenship, ask the clerk, and try to haggle a little bit for a good price.
For an electric guitar, you can't go wrong with a Fender Strat or Telecaster. I think that every famous rock guitarist has used a Fender at one point in their lives... Fender is just a rock 'n' roll tradition.
You also don't need an expensive guitar to play well, people have this stupid misconception. I've been playing the same cheap ass electric guitar for 3 years now, and it hasn't failed on me.
electric... buy a fender acoustic... buy a martin both brands have cheaper and more expensive models. start by learning your open chords and then learn your barre chords... major and minor chords first and then learn 7th chords, 9th chords, etc. learn a few cover songs from bands you admire and then start writing your own songs in that style. my advice is start writing your own stuff as soon as possible.
alrite thx for the info guys, unfortunately my dad isnt the richest man alive so i cant get a guitar or lessons yet and i will probably have to sell something of mine to help pay for it but o well its worth it thanks again im thinking im just gunna get a cheap fender strat maybe one thats from 250-350 and an amp under 100 bux ill let u guys know wat im gunna get
