So when my brother and I went dumpster
diving he found me an electric guitar and
    amplifier.
I have many questions, well a few to start
    with...
1)if you would prefer to be playing like
Spanish guitar which is more acoustic
would an electric guitar be okay to start
    learning on?
2)how much do strings for a Silvertone Rockit
    go for?
    3) how much does the plug in between the
guitar and the amplifier go for? Does it
    have a special name?

    Thanks all!
    bb

thats cool..it must be a sign, practice daily.

but if you are looking to play spanish guitar i would recommend a classical guitar.

electric will be fine to learn on though, there is no problem with that. it is still a guitar.

strings are not specific to the guitar you use, really. it just depends on personal preference.

and that plug you speak of is called a lead. they are usually around a dollar per foot i would say..unless you are looking something of higher quality (gold plated or something of that nature) but i doubt you will be finding anything shorter than 10 feet.

A lead? What? I'm not sure if that's true, but it's more commonly called an instrument cable. I'm sure you can find a cheap one for around 5 bucks. And yeah, any set of regular electric strings should work, you should also be able to find them for around 5 dollars or so.

So I would prefer acoustic anywhoooooo
so I took it into the guitar shop today to
see if I could swap it for store credit...
what a mega suprise!! I have seen ones like
it on the web for around $170ish and up and down
but around that....the guy said it was made from
particle board and that it and its amplifier and gig
bag and strap were only worth $100!!! So instead of
getting a nice small cheapy classic guitar I will only
have credit for a small cheapy ukulele! sigh.....
I like ukuleles and all but I really did see Silvertone
rockits listed for more than $50 for the guitar and $50
    for the amp!
    totally confused.......
    and a bit bummed
    peace

    To answer your first questions...

    1) It doesn't really matter what you're learning it on. Classical guitar might be your best bet if you're going to be playing Flamenco (Spanish) guitar.
But it won't make a monumental difference.

    2) You should be able to use just about any kind of strings. However, for the Silvertone or whatever it is, you're going to want to make sure you get metal strings instead of nylon. Nylon is typically only used on classical guitars and on some acoustic guitars. I'm personally a big fan of the Ernie Ball Super-Slinky strings. You should be able to get them anywhere for about $5. Buy a couple packs, at least. You'll break at least one string trying to put it on. Watch some youtube videos on how to put strings on. The 10 minutes you waste with that will be worth not breaking $15 worth of strings and ripping your hand up.

    3) It's called an instrument cable. (Though I myself call them input cords.) You can find them at just about any music store. You're better off getting one that's a little more expensive. I made the mistake of buying cheap ones initially. I have a good fifty or sixty feet of useless instrument cable sitting in a coil in my closet now.
(Check around here and read the reviews before you make a purchase: http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/cables-snakes/instrument-cables)

Yeah. I've heard them be called leads before.

Just didn't think it was anything worth arguing about.
