Do you trim your sideburns or let them go with your hair?

Personally I wasn't going to trim them anymore but one day when shaving(with my clippers with no guard, I never use a razor) decided that they were way too long and just looked bad. When I began to trim them it really bothered me that I was cutting my hair. I felt quite bad while doing it. While I do attain a more professional image, which I need at times, it still really killed me to trim them. The hair was at least 2 inches. I also had a hard time decided what hair was on my "head" and the sideburn hair that needed trimmed.

Overall the entire experience was pretty bad. I just didn't like it. Alas, the girlfriend said she liked it better. I also have my own computer business and anything that helps maintain a professional imagine without maintaining my hair helps. So, I was wondering what you all do. Trim? No?

If you don't want to do it, don't do it. I doubt if sideburns are going to make you look much less professoinal if you already have dreads.

    Grow them bad boys out!

I support all forms of facial hair, I think if you can grow it you should. I wish i could grow anything.

I shave once or twice a month and keep a goatee all the time. And in between times there is a beard. I always have facial hair and have since it first grew in years ago. I mean I really like trimmed sideburns but actual act of cutting my hair was hard. I didn't realize quite how attached to my hair I was. I like the trimmed look better but man it just pains me to cut it. Facial hair too. I like it trimmed but act of getting there kills me every time. It's like double edges sword.

Hmm. I personally wouldn't grow sideburns with dreads, but if my hair was shorter, I would.

Of course, I can't grow facial hair yet, so I shouldn't be talking.

i sit on my beard (dreaded) i couldnt bring myselyfg to trim a hair anywhere on my body
i always say im alergic to scissors
i say if it grows..let it grow

and professional images are totaly self imposed.. theyre bullshit
i used to sell computers myself.
also mannahed 200+ volunteer web designers for a non proffit hosting company and had meetings with the heads of everty non proffit in the state, even the big ones like red cross
after that, started my own non proffit, and had meetings with the mayor, city council reps, congressmen, ceos of several business and non proffit groups (that were on opur boyurd of advisors, i was on the board of directors)

when i started at the non proffit hosting company, our receptionist had tatoos all over, her ears stretched to.. well you could put a beer can through the holes
and she had a bone through her lip (hey she was gorgouse and sweet she could get away with it)
point is, your professional image is in how u pressent yourself, not in how you look.
its in your attitude and the air of confidence u project. if you acyt like you know what yoir talking about then u seeem very professionasl, thats it.
a freind of mine is a plumber, ok not the most professional field of work youd think, but hes highly skilled with working with high pressure gas lines and other stuff the average plumber never touches, ..in fact hes 1 of the only ones in the area who does some of the things he does, so hes in very high demand.
hes an old hippie, with scrawny lil dreads (very thin hair that grows very slowly, lil greasy so his dreads are perpetualy in the infant stage) and he has never owned a pair of shoes in his life so always workes barefoot (even in winter)
not exactly a proffessional image youd think, but he is very professional, so is in the highest demand.

another freind, lives in a tipi, retired nowbut hes got severe back probs, uses a wheelchair sometimes, or 2 sticks to walk with..or crawls, looks like your typical aging hippie otherwise, if you talk to him you realize hes totaly briliant. but, if you look at his busines card thats when you see just how amazing he is.
it lists like 6 or 8 phds, followed by all the companies he was ceo of (around 10, all very well known companies) all these in small black letters.
following that, in red bold lewtters is "and also an accomplished apple picker" his 1 aches most proud of.

now if u look at him, he looks like the type to have never had a straight job in hiis life. he travels in a hippie schoolbus, lives in a tipi, and was featured in a discovery channel doccumenmtaery called off the grid (he fiunbded a off the grid community known as the mesa near taos nm)
not at all the type person youd ever expect to be a ceo
yet hes smart enough to teach quantum physics at the best universities in the world and run the biggest corporartions. yet humble enough to be most proud of his apple picking abilities.

all im saying is, screw professional images, and just be professional
be good at what u do and it wontmatter 1 bit how u look.
the ppl who cant see past the look desserve to be screwed over by a flashy looking second rate ripoff.
do the best you can and you'll be respected for it.
if u have to look a certain way to attract business then you must not be doing the best job you can.

Such a good point. I never thought of it that way round.

To me it's always, I don't want to work for the type of people who would want me to look a certain way.

    Cool.

ive always been alergic to bosses anyway always preffered to be self employed
and was most of my life.
the few boses i did have since dreading had no probs with my dreads.
in fact when the hosting company put out a calander to sprewad theyre corporate image around to all the other potential cluients in the state they had me and my dreads as part of theyre ..i guess u could call it theyre corporate logo or something.
right on the front cover as a repressentation of theyre corporate image ..permenantly.
and at thye time i was only there for a year position (americorp vista, basicly a paid volunteer) they did offer me a full time position after, but i wanted to devote my time to my own businesses so turned it down. (glad i did yoo, 2 months later they switched fromnon proffit to for proffit, lost 1/2 theyree non proffit clients and the businbess failed maybe a year later.)

great posts and kind words. I am not sure if I will continue to trim them or not. I don't want to but I really don't want a full beard either. This summer will tell.
