I talked to a couple that visited there in the late 80's, they said all there was at the supermarket was cans of meat and tomatoes.
Since that time they have already developed a bit according to their standards. Romania used to be a very unique country in the meaning that it could successfully be both communist and fascist at the same time in the so called Ceasescu-system. Now things are getting better as they've already had some highly educated intellectual people who are able to look a bit farther than the traditionally perverse nacionalist line...
Hell, I'll go anywhere! I'd love to check out Romania. I'd go to Bulgaria first, though. I've heard Sofia is top notch.
Râ„¢mania is a beautiful country, with the friendliest people i've ever met...the country is really coming on leaps and bounds but it is still poor. The language is surprisingly easy if you speak another romance language (French, Spanish, Catalan, Italian, Portuguese), and the country is a fantastic cultural anomoly. A island of latinity, in a slavic sea. Very different to the countries surrounding it. It also has some beautiful cities (though Bucharest is a sad case...the neo-classical architecture (think Paris) was destroyed by Ceasescu and his cronies when they gutted out the city centre and created tower blocks and revolting 'Palace of the People'). They call the district 'Hiroshima' or something like that i see to remember. It makes me so happy that Romania (and Bulgaria) are joining the EU next year.
Din ce oras esti ? Ma bucur ca exista cineva din Romania pe aici ( What town r u from? I'm glad there is someone from Romania in here... )
Romania is great. I was there one month ago - Bucuresti is so lovely city, it has nothing common with the communist epoch. Prices are ok, more expensive than prices in other Balkan cities (Sofia for example), but still far away from the standarts of Western Europe. If you visit Romania in summer time, go to Mamaya, this is resort on the Black Sea coast, you won't regret!
