I'm just curious to see if this has happened to anyone else. Have you ever encountered "Heads" (ie Phishheads, Deadheads, Zepheads. etc...) who were so militant that it turned you off to a band's music. When I say Militant I mean for example Phishheads who catagorize music as Phish or Everything Else. And coincidentally "Everything Else" generally either "Sucks" or "Phish is better." Or when I was in High School (Which I graduated in 1994) I used to hear "Led Zepplin is the greatest rock group of all time man. John Paul Jones is a loser since he won't get back together with Page and Plant!!!!!" I've come to appreciate Phish. To me they aren't the beginning or the end. As a musician I can't imagine how it would feel to have fans like that (ie the militant ones). I think that I would carry a list of 10 other albums that I would suggest they Buy/Listen to Before Mine. I believe that Music is like food for the soul. Who would only want to eat just one kind of food? Sometimes I'm in the mood for Indian (Mahavishnu). But sometimes I want a veggie burrito (The Dead). Sometimes I want a little Grease (Col. Bruce Hampton). Sorry for the long post but anybody else have any comments?
For one the post was not that long and another, your apology is insincere. You query because you want to go right back and post some more, but that non the less, is the purpose of a forum for posting. And, I am not into guilt by association either.
Crass zealots circa early-1980s [I mean the band Crass ]. Generally 14-year old militant punks who'd lecture you on anarchy and veganism and stuff, when all the time you knew they'd be going back to their parents affluent house in the suburbs [dad a company director or something], probably via a McDonalds. Actually, once I'd got past them, I found I didn't much like Crass anyway.
God they almost sound as bad as Trustafarians. I usually have to define so forgive me if you already know. A Trustafarian is a white upper middle class kid with dreadlocks who drives a Range Rover with a Bob Marley sticker on it. Usually has only a half a clue about the culture they are imitating. Sometimes they go so far as to adopt African names. Usually when the introduce themselves with said names I just want to respond, "Your name isn't M'tulu. It is John Smith. You are not from Africa. You are from the suburbs. You are playing a plastic Djembe with a picture of Bob Marley screenprinted on it. Nothing screams I'm sticking it to the man like driving the Range Rover yourfather bought you with a Bob Marley sticker on it. Please drive that gas guzzler back to the suburbs and dress like the preppy you are." Peace Out, Rev J
Regarding Anarchists. Every year in Golden Gate Park there is an Anarchist Book Fair. I went once and will never go back. I agree with Anarchists in principal. But I don't like getting stared down at because I don't wear the uniform (i.e. have a pink mohawk and a leather jacket. Peace Out, Rev J
i wouldnt associate myself with people that think phish is the best band... they are good now but they used to be better... theres definitely bands that are throwin better concerts
Re: Crass and Anarchist Punk I saw a Dvd on the shelf of some store with the History of Anarchist Punk Included onit was Chumbawumba. What kind of capitalist piece of shit Propaganda is this!? I remember their one hit and it seemed like Anarchy as a marketing gimmick. We put out stupid Piece of Shit pop songs and tell people to steal our CD's in interviews. Then we can be Anarchists.
Hmm.. The Deadheads and Phishheads turned me off of jam bands in general for a long time, mostly because I didn't like the few songs I've heard by Phish and all the fans seemed like absolute echoes of each other, that couldn't be trusted. Juggalos turned me off of ICP and many of their associated acts because most seemed like punk ass wiggers and only bumped their bunk shit. Then I met cool juggalos online and then I heard songs that I would've never guessed was ICP, and now I have all their CDs downloaded and never get around to looking through them =P Mahavishnu is awesome by the way =D
My major problem, I think, with Crass and Chumbawumba and their ilk musically is that it was like being shouted at by some very intense people with no apparent sense of humour, irony or self-deprecation. And when I met their fans it was like being shouted at by some very intense people with no apparent sense of humour, irony or self-deprecation. I mean, who needs it ? :willy_nilly:
Probably other people with no sense of humour, irony or self-deprecation To be honest, any group of people who need to to listen to 'Crass' to be anarchist, aren't really very rebellious at all. I don't need some bald idiot giving me rules and guidelines to being ruleless and unguided.
Also though I only remember Chumbawumba from that stupid "I get Knocked down/But I get again" song. I used to work in a record store and had to ilisten to that 15 times a day. I met someone who changed the Lyrics to "I get Knocked Up/But I put out again".
it's never turned me off to a band, but it is really annoying when you run into people that listen exclusively to phish, dead, etc... even moreso when you yourself get lumped into one of those categories. case and point: i can't stand folks who pigeonhole their taste like that... there's always more music to be heard... why stop looking for it?
Those aren't Anarchists... They are just punks that latched on to the Anarchist moniker as an excuse to act like fuckwads. ZW
Dave Matthews fans kind of turned me off to Dave Matthews, i mean his stuff is ok but it's watered down like sunday morning jam band stuff and i don't think he's anywhere near as great as people make him out to be. Someone mentioned ICP, yah i'm not much of a fan of them, juggalos are kind of amusing though. and in the DJ world people make way to much of a big deal of Tiesto and Armin Van Buuren.
