Anyone know of a decent free image editing software for mac? I can't afford photoshop, but the free software I've tried is a pain in the ass!

Gimp has a couple tools I like but it's a pain in the ass to use and it seems like something always quits working on me with it.

I don't know. I myself really don't like GIMP. I'd probably go for getting photoshop. If you get on their website, you can download a thirty day trial. That'll hold you over for a bit. You can find some serials to put into it once your trial runs out if you don't have much of a problem with breaking the law a little bit.

Stealing software may be breaking the law, but it also steals from the software programmers who work very hard.

Yeah, I know. Stealing is wrong.

But yeah, if you're willing to fork over some cash, and are in school still, I know you can get some major discounts from adobe. My friend just bought CS4 for $320 instead of $1000 or whatever it is.

man, repent and sin no more :p no seriously i dont think that stealing is a bad thing per se , the point is who are you robbing, what and why. and i think that a big software corp does not deserve to be respected, they are not poor peasants, still i think that it's not a good idea to use cracked stuff when an alternative is available. Gimp is fine and used professionally, and should work alright. don't know if there are issues with Macs. maybe you need a manual to start with. if you feel like to eradicate the problem you can enter a world of free rock solid software: make the big leap and put yellow dog Linux or another linux distro for mac like Ubuntu/ppc (http://www.penguinppc.org/about/distributions.php) on yer Mac and you'll have one of the coolest computers around.

Let's all be the Robin Hoods of technology.

I don't know. I have no problem stealing music, because I don't think the people who do it for the right reason (Because they love doing it) mind all that much, and those that are doing it just to make money don't deserve to get anything for it. However, I'll willingly start buying CDs once I get a source of income. I just kinda view it as a loan when I download music.

But with software, yeah, I do kinda feel bad stealing that. Some of it goes back to the lack of income; I might consider buying software once I have money. But so much of the software that you have to pay for is total crap. So I don't know.

    I have twisted morals :/

It's hard to say no to free stuff when you want and have no money.
And a lot eaier to tell others not too, when you do.

I buy the stuff I can afford and try games by downloading. If I enjoy it most likely I'll buy it. Most of the time you have to buy it to play online anyway, and I enjoy that.
    But I'm guilty of downloading.

It's not that it's difficult. I just don't think it does as much nearly as well as photoshop. And though most basic stuff is fairly easy, things become complicated pretty easily as you try and get more advanced.

on debian and slackware G.I.M.P is verry stable maybe you can try to debug it and check the debug output which could give some clues to why it chrashes or halts....
there is a student version of adobe photoshop CS4 which is sold at a reduced price....

Yeah, that's what my friend got. She only had to pay $300 instead of the $1000 or whatever.

Does the student version have an expiration? I ask because some student version software's have expiration functions.

Gimp does a lot more than photoshop. It is a matter of learning how. The only complaint I see for usability is not everything has a ''preview'' function to understand what each option does.
Gimp has a very scalable ability to use one or several effects to generate the input of another effect. This might actually be refered to as scripting. It is not necessary to learn Gimp scripting to use Gimp, thankfully.

I think you need to get down and dirty with all the different things like redering, light effects, bump maps, softglow, and all that other good jazz. Once you learn the ropes, you can do anything with Gimp.

Also, Gimp is 70% selection, 30% editing.

To be honest I don't know if there is a expiration date for photoshop CS4, i could ask the IT service how it works exactly.
    (Will keep you posted.)

the XP and office 2007 packages don't have a expiration function they can be run indefinitely....

i tried both photoshop and G.I.M.P i keep going back to G.I.M.P because of the robust simplicity after a few weeks of trial and error and reading about G.I.M.P I found working with it easier.

Thanks, everyone. Sorry it took so long to get back.

I found out a friend has photoshop, so that problem is solved. gimp does have some cool tools, but there's a lot I just can't seem to figure out on it.

I guess if I found really good documentation on gimp it would be worth studying but my experience with software documentation in general hasn't been good.
