My mom is a good mother, but an absolutely terrible person. She is just a complete bitch to just about everyone. My dad is the opposite, he's a good person but only really cares about work. My brother used to be cool but now he's a little bit older and turned into a huge asshole.
I picked a college across the country so I could get away from them and everything I ever knew. It's only my first year and I hate it. I still don't miss my family, I love living on my own, just hate school a lot. I've been thinking about dropping out and either going to travel Europe, or moving to California and just starting a new life. I have a little over 30k saved up and at this point I don't really care what my family thinks about my decision.
Anyone ever experience anything like this?

Yes, I hated my 1st year at college and I want to escape NY, and i also wanted to travel to Europe. Somewhere different from this hell hole. I am glad you have money saved up, and thats enough to get started. I will just say make sure you have a plan, and what you are going to do when you move.

*I'm still thinking about moving somewhere, or attending other college somewhere else. How come you hate your college?

I never really liked school at all, I just don't think it's for me. I love the atmosphere here, it's a huge school. I've been looking for cheap 1 bedroom apartments all over Cali and found some decent ones so far. No job lined up yet, I'd like to do something with the marijuana industry, but I'll take anything I can get.

I actually have a pretty solid itinerary set up for the Europe trip, I would just have to book the flight and hostels. I'm waiting until I go back home for break to drop the news on my parents.

Normally, I'd say finish education then travel, blah blah. I'm sure it is still the best thing, BUT anymore I think people should do what they can to follow their dreams. Sounds lame, but why live if you can't experience and feel what you want? Go for it! I wish I would have moved to the beach and got a shitty place with a shitty job until I worked up to more at a place I loved. Instead, I'm still here with nothing to show for it.

I was thinking someone would give the whole "finish your education" speech. But thanks for your response!

    college is great if :
    1. It's part of your plans (going to be a professor) (want to be a lawyer)
    2. You're not sure what job you want (provides a launching pad)

I left college and am chasing business, I see it, taste it and don't mind this life. I think I may learn to love it. I hope that if you leave college you have a living that you like to do. I hope you have a living in mind that you'll be able to do and want to do for life.

though almost always better if you're miserable to go out there and live, and worst scenario you'll return with a better appreciation of your situation.

its call a college plan, As a parent , you are suppose to have an account for your kids, and every time you get a paycheck money is suppose to transfer to that account. Well I just know alot of parents who do this.

Ah! Wow! I wish my parents had saved up 30K for me while I was growing up! can't imagine that ever happening in this country. If parents are super-rich then no one is going to get anything like 30k off their folks.

I wish my parent's have done the same, One of my friends parents were smart enough to do that when he was born, so when he reach 18 he had over 20k in the bank to start with.

Damn...you're sure ungrateful. Your parents put back 30k so you could go to school, but instead you want to fuck off to California? I mean, if it was your hard-earned money, that's one thing, but as was pointed out, it's not likely that is your money. If you're going to quit school, give your parents their money back, and make it on your own. Otherwise you're just completely disrespecting them and the hard work they did so that you'd be able to go to school.

the OP didn't actually say it's a college plan. she might have waited a year or two to go to college after finishing high school, in order to save up some money. you should wait for the OP to weigh in before assuming that he/she is an ungrateful twat.

You can do okay without education, it just means working harder to provide your needs, and not have much extra money. It's a pleasant life in a way. If I had it to do over, I would finish college then travel then get a girlfriend and settle down. If you get a degree in something productive, chances are good you will have enough money to travel afterwards. In this area we manufacture a lot of mobile homes and have mobile home parks. I would suggest visiting a mobile home park in your area and touring one to see how you are going to end up living if you don't finish college. A college diploma is the new high school diploma.

$30K is hard to come by when you're college age. It's just a guess. And I frequently stated, if it was not OP's hard-earned money, it was not OP's to do whatever he/she wanted to if it was indeed set aside for college. I assume nothing.

What about parents with four children when one makes just over minimum wage, the other is unemployed, they can barely make ends meet and haven't even gone to college themselves? I'm sorry, but that's how I grew up, my parents have no money, not enough to pay the bills, rigged vehicles to pass inspection, no retirement fund, no savings at all and you think that a parent is SUPPOSED to have a college plan? They don't have to, parents don't even have to have or keep their child or children.

I don't know why, but I find you so extremely offensive and distasteful in saying that his parents were 'smart enough to do that'. Don't you think that there are plenty of people out there who WISH that they had the opportunity to do this for their children? But once financial reality sets in this isn't even possible, how can you save up when money is so tight, and has been all your life? Sorry you view life as some fantasy land where everyone has the right amount or an abundance of resources, but it's not, it's a shit hole, because even though there is enough to go around, it never will, and not all of us grew up with a silver spoon in our mouths because out parents were 'smart enough'. I just can't believe you even have the balls to say something so disgraceful as accusing someone's parents as not 'being smart enough'. This is a topic that has nothing to do with smarts or brains, money doesn't come easily for everybody.
