I am an organ recipient. It pisses me off to no end that I had to wait so many years for a liver. Granted, I have a rare blood type: but 5 years is a hell of a long wait. My doctor informed me that the reason I had to wait so long was because not that many people have signed their donor cards. I would love to see a transplant policy whereby you are considered an organ donor unless you state otherwise So please post if you have or have not signed your card and the reason why. rettyplease: PAX
Hey, I had a liver transplant too!! I only had to wait 4 days though, but that was because I was severely ill and was given less than 7 days to live. I also have a pretty common blood type, but yeah. I'm a registered organ donor, though I can't donate blood or bone marrow, so I'm not sure if they'll really let me donate. But in principle, I'd def do it.
I have. I also donate blood regularly. I'd donate one of my kidneys now, but diabetes runs in my family and I'm afraid that one day I will need both of them. You can donate your liver when your still alive right? Since it's regenerative. If that's a possiblity than I would love to do it. I would love to get in the bone marrow registry, but you have to pay for it and I can so not afford it. The problem isn't always that people don't sign the cards. Even if you sign the card, the next of kin always has the last word. You have to make sure that your family is aware of your wishes to donate and make sure that they will uphold your wishes. My mom, brother and I have all talked about what we want in case of death or brain death. You have to make sure these things are out in the open, even if you are still very young.
What's the reason for that? Religious, just ick you out, or something else? Just curious, not attacking you or anything.
I'm really disappointed that more people did not participate in this poll. ----especially ones who have not signed their donor card. Every year at least 15% of people on transplant lists die waiting for an organ. Just last week I heard that a second person died who received a liver transplant the same time as I did. According to my doctor, he died basically for the same reason that the first one did. That was because his body had deteriorated so much waiting for a transplant. If he didn't have to wait till his body got so weak, and his symptoms were getting more severe, he probably would have lived. But- those are the rules: there are so many people in need of organ transplants that they only get put on the transplant list when their condition reaches the criteria that is set out. I sure hope things really don't happen in threes. PAX
I have B+. only 4% of the population is blood type B. When I was placed on the list there were only 15 people before me. But I still had to wait 5 long years for the call. I hope you are never in need of an organ transplant. The wait is pure hell. One of the worst things that would go through my mind was when I heard of a car accident- I was kinda hoping someone had died: pretty sad ............ PAX
i have AB+ blood! when i die they can do what they like with my body. i really want to be a cadaver. i suffer serve migraines... hopefully my body will give some clues as to what to do about them for others. oh and YES i have signed my card and i tell everyone (when the subject comes up) that i want to be a cadaver.
I have the most common blood type there is, so I'm not in very high demand, but luckily, if I were ever in need it'd be easier to find. Of course that also means that there will be that much more people waiting for the same thing that I am.
be a donor! the life you save might just be a loved one! (or someone who needs to be here for someone else)
There are still not enough people signing their donor cards. I just lost another friend because her liver failed before she could receive another one. So please, sign your donor card. PAX
Even though B + might be rare, you can be given type O, since there are both A and B antibodies and no antigens present in O which will react with B's B antigens As far as it goes, I probably would, but if I had my choice I wouldn't. I don't like the idea of pulling pieces out of recently deceased people, it seems inhumane and unsympathetic. However, if I ever need an organ transplant then it's only fair I allow it to happen to myself. I am not selfish or uncaring, but I find it strange.
I have no idea what type of blood I have- I would give blood but I'm 13 and my dad is strictly against it. When I die I want every little usable bit of my body to go help someone, and the remaining parts to be cremated and made into what's called a memorial reef. So no, not a donor YET. But I certainly will be one day.
ok, i voted that i had signed a donor card which, not 100% true. when i lived in seattle, up to 4 years ago. i was enrolled in the 'willed body program' with the university of washington medical school. under that program, i gave them full rights, at the time of my death, to harvest any usable organs from my body, for transplant to anyone whom, is a match on the national waiting list. the state department of health, has a computer database will all my info hooked into all a public and privite health providers in the state of washington and, with the databases of the other state health departments. i hear and understand your anger pax-man. the problem with donor cards is, that, if they do not get entered into the national database; then the card is worthless. a good number of those cards never get entered! there are a number of reasons for that. when i was accepted into the 'willed body program,' the state of washington sent me a confirmation letter of my acceptance that, i could verify on the county, state, and national databases. when i moved back to texas about 4 years ago; i was horrified and super pissed off to, find out the state of texas did not have my info in their database...WTF! i have gotten my info into the texas database and, THEY KEEP PURGING IT FROM THEIR SYSTEM! the reason for this is, that some years back, the state turned over their department of health to be run by a private corporation. that corporation was cutting cost by purging people off database. their cost benefit analysis showed, it saved money to purge the database and let people die! last year the state was forced to come in and, break their contract with that corporation and, the state is now running the department of health again. libertarians and neo-liberals can, go eat shit and die! their philosophy does not work! there are somethings government does one hell of a lot better then corporations any day!
