For as long as I can remember I have gotten these every so often, I will be sitting or standing somewhere and all of a sudden for about 5 seconds (sometimes longer) my heart will start beating EXTREMELY fast for no apparent reason. I have asked the doctor about it and they always just say to 'keep an eye on it'. In the past 2 months or so they have become more and more frequent. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing them?

i was born with heart palpitations and still get them... it can be really scary and gloria- i know we both have suffered from anxiety and i wonder if palpitations have anything to do with anxiety... im guessing they do cause they are really scary.

i went to a doctor about this before though and what they did was measured whether or not my heart beat was regular despite the speed and it was.... so they said palpitations aent dangerous unless they are irregular.

i often wonder if some day im gonna find out its more serious though and they just didnt take it seriously or pay enough attention to it.

as for what could be making yours more frequent, it could be anxiety... but if you're seriously worried about it, make them give you tests. its your right as a human.

I think anxiety could be a huge part of it.. Ever since I started having anxiety I've noticed things like this happening.. And also I'm pretty sure my anxiety contributes some hypochondria, so I would freak out whenever something would hurt or something. But I just can't do that anymore.. its so stressful.

So I think anxiety could be a part of it, even if its subconcious.

Yes, it could certainly be anxiety that is causing them. But to be on the safe side, I'd request a cardiac work-up with your doctor, and if he/she is still wishy-washy about it, find another doctor. Your concerns need to be taken seriously!

    Good luck!

but what i was saying is.. if she had heart palpitations before anxiety- i think they can feed on each other..... know what i mean?

if the condition with the heart existed first, anxiety could make it worse and more noticeable so gloria... did you get these before anxiety or after?

sorry i dont know what is going on but i cant edit or quote on here today so i have to keep making more posts.. sucks but oh well

fact is most likely you will find out like i did, its mostly anxiety bringing those feelings out (anxiety makes you VERY aware of your bodily processes and i know u panic attacks before)... you might have palpitations too that are "real" and like i said.. i have had them since a baby.. very real but apparently not dangerous.

i still dont know if i trust that opinion about that. girl, get it checked out. im sure youll find its fine but only heart you got :D love ya :D

yeah I used to have bad heart palpitations .... went through some tests and everything but it was all clear, was supposed to go do some other heart tests ... I said to hell with it .... it was later I figured out it was mostly anxiety disorder...

Something else someone once suggested to me, is something called "prolapse mitrovalve" ... or, something like that? Anyways ... its some (usually harmless) thing that happens when a valve sticks closed or.... something (I obviously forget the details) .... but that was supposed to also maybe cause heart palpitations.

thanks for the concern Trish...man I havnt spoken to you in ages! Yes, like you I have been getting them before my anxiety set in, but not to the same extent. Its probably likely that it is related to that, it wouldnt surprise me. I took a look at the website and although I sometimes get very mild chest pains apart from the that I have no other symptoms to make the palpatations appear to be dangerous. Im going to start keeping a diary of them however, and make a not of when I have them to see if a pattern is building and the extent that they are increasing. Its nice to know that for the most part they are harmless. :)
Thanks for all the advice everyone, I feel a bit better now.
