Although I'm certain that you've seen this type of thread at least fifty times, I've also noticed that you guys enjoy posting here.

    Anyway, I've been contemplating getting dreadlocks for around four months now, and it's my top priority. Immediately, I was sucked in by the Dreadheadhq website, as it has a pseudo monopoly over the dreadlock "market" for products at least. They recommended wax, which I've just found out you guys hate. You pointed out a lot of things about the guy from that website, which may or may not be true. This leads me to my questions;

    A) Is this website legit for getting dreads?
    B) I've got straight, thick hair, would the neglect method work?
    C) What method do you recommend?

A side note to keep in mind, I guess, while answering these questions is I want dreads that, in the long run (very, very long), look like this or this or this, mainly the first and third.

Thanks in advance, I look forward to your responses as they tend to be rather entertaining.

    A) Dreadheadhq can go suck a donkey dick
    B) Yep. That's what my hair is like and it dreaded up
    C) Natural/Neglect if you have the patience. Twist and rip otherwise. Backcombing can go fuck off

Okay, cool. Is there any reason backcombing can fuck off though?

    A) Would depend on what your definition of dreads are, Lets just say there are better ways.
    B) Yes.
    C) For dreads like that, Backcomb, palm role.

I've thought about neglect. I've never actually myself put a comb to my hair, and I'd like to get a feel for the whole process. I mean, going into college not much to pass the time in between studying besides... you know.

What I meant by worthy was a lot of you seem to be really picky about what you even consider to be "dreads".

I think the idea of making dreadlocks with a comb kind of oxymoronic.

Just a personal hate I have

That's understandable, but I want them because I, God forbid, think that they look cool.

Your hate for backcombing. Also, backcombing isn't bad, so don't base that of pat's hater-shades. Backcombing works well for those who don't want a rats nest for months. And as far as achieveing that look without wax, go with backcombing and use a crochet hook on your roots and such.

I don't know about you, but maybe you'll like how your dreads are when they're getting done.. I liked those too when I first started. Either way - Welcome to the start of your journey. Make it a long one.

Ps: Stop hatin' on fools Pat.
Edit: Oh by the way, it'll take around 6 months to even start to see your hair form into that hair you want, no matter which road you take (Maybe except neglect)

Easy there mr my dreads (which look more like braids) are 10 days old and I know everything there is to know about locks

He asked for answers and I gave him my opinion on the questions. I can hate backcombed locks all I want

mine were backcombed six months ago, without wax. the majority are nicely knotty/matted up by the root, and i got a lot of loose ends. i also got a gazillion loose hairs that im not ganna bother crocheting..

if you can deal with messy hair, do whatever feels good for you

i personally couldnt do natural/neglect, cause im too impatient. twist and rip gives good results, but so does backcombing

If you want to have your dreads look like the ones in the pics without wax I suggest you crochet, but it can also leave an odd texture, they will be neat (as is not messy). But if you just backcomb or twist 'n' rip you'll probably love them as well, 'cause it's hard to hate dreads.
You don't have to choose one method and stick with it, do whatever you feel is necessary for you.

    Good luck :D
