Highway Child REBIRTH

If you aren't familiar with Highway Child and our story thus far you can refer to our other threads in this (Communal Living) forum. A brief written up history will follow in the weeks to come (i'll let Blink aka Drew write that up for us..hehe) but what is most relevant at the moment is our "Rebirth". Not that we ever died but I feel like we are rising to better things at the moment and changing a few things about the way we interact with the "outside world" and function within the community. We are working on being more consistent, more focused, and moving towards bigger things. "Bigger things" being: a more solid active community and hopefully being as sustainable as possible and working out some of the repetitive "kinks" we've come to notice through out the years.

We have used the forums in the passed to keep those interested in our story updated and for networking. We want to keep doing this but in a more responsible way and by implying less, much less, drama. This time around we are trying to make "blogging" about our story moving forward and yes, obviously the uphill battle and difficulties involving something like this, but all the while keeping pointless, petty drama off the boards and most importantly off and out of Highway Child buses and community.

A brief personal Highway Child story:

I found out about Highway Child about 6, wow almost 7 years ago i think, surfing the web. I was immediately attracted and developed an almost obsessive interest. I was 14 at the time and wanted to be involved in any way I could. I contacted Blink via the forums and asked him what I could do to help and be part of Highway Child at a distance (being 14....parents, blablabla, you know how it goes). I began making jewelry (lots of hand made fimo beads, etc) for them to sell on the road: i would mail them to a convenient address, and they would use them to make and sell more hand made goods. It was small, but was a first step in being part of Highway Child and satisfied (in the least possible way...) my burning need to be a part of the community. This first crew and bus I was involved with came to an end, plans for more buses were put on hold and life took on different routes for many of the tribe.

Eventually and expectedly there was talk of a new bus, a Canadian bus, and I immediately hopped on board. Still at a distance, but much more involved this time around. Our "tribe in the works" at the time was scattered around the country and built solely via the internet. We had almost-weekly internet meetings, put money together, bought a bus and got tribe physically together working on the actual bus. This took time, things fell apart, changed directions and tribe changed constantly but it finally happened: we had a built bus. At this point in time my life took on a different route and I followed it instinctively: the only way I know how to deal with life. I was 17 and I had met someone through our mutual involvement with Highway Child: I was in love and life became much more about that and slowly much less about Highway Child and eventually it just wasn't part of our plans anymore. I had lost myself and given up on everything that had previously meant anything to me and my life revolved around this one person. I moved away from home and out of province the minute i turned 18 and continued my path down a more often than not very dark road with this person. During my time "out" of the Highway Child "loop", the bus was taken out, from my later understanding, on a few trips and joy rides but nothing consistent or community based was really accomplished.

Eventually I threw together the very little bit of strength I had left and got out of the relationship that had been controlling my life for the past 2 years and came home. I was turning 19 that same week. Immediately after arriving home I contacted Blink and learned that the bus, years later, was sitting in his driveway in still very good condition. With nothing to lose I made it out there as soon as I could and work began to get it road worthy again and to build new Tribe. We hit the road within a few weeks with things already unravelling within the Tribe but we tried to push through anyway. Within a month or two, we were passing through my home town, at this point there was only two of us (Tom and I) on the bus, and we ended up being immobile for a couple weeks, where I eventually made the decision to get off the bus and let it continue on down the road without me due to conflict and disagreements Tom and I were having, and as well because I had things to work out of my mind and body and soul.

Tom impressively threw together a new crew, and hit the road again going west. It was difficult keeping informed about the Highway Child at this point because contact wasn't being made or followed up on. My impression, not having been on the bus during that time, is that Tribe not being solid and community rules not really being followed, brought the whole thing to fall apart, the crew deciphered and we lost a bus as a result by the time summer was ending.

These things happen. Life goes on, I tried to settle into a life here, getting a job, going back to school but Highway Child was always in my heart and on my mind. Another bus was thrown together, without me being involved in any way, and then sold. Nothing really ever happened with it but i think it helped keep Tribe occupied and involved with each other.

This brings us to now, and it brings me to getting involved seriously all over again. I am off to a monastery on a stewardship for a couple months, and come May 1st I will be back on the land at Blink's aka Drew's and working on a bus. It will be difficult to contact me for the next 2 months, but I will try to get this thing moving forward as much as I can until then. We're once again looking for Tribe and interested folk. There currently isn't a bus, funds are low but the hunger and dream is bigger than it's ever been, and there is already 3 really good hearts and in this. Let's DO this. Contact us!!!! If you're in the Montreal area, we could possibly meet up this week and talk busses, Tribe, stories and community before I leave. If you're in the Thunder Bay area, we could possibly meet near the end of the month very briefly before I head off to the monastery. If you're in the hamilton area there could be the possibility of chatting it up with Blink!

This is a wonderful experience and opportunity, getting back to the roots of community and a true sense belonging and what hard work can bring more than just a paycheck...

Blinkin IS Drew....I'm really confused about this as well, i've known drew for a very long time and i've never seen him on here as "olympic bullshitter" and i can assure you his grammar is usually a lot messier!!!

ive always been considered a drug nazi. because our buses cross borders and we are prone to police searches ( big painted up buses tend to attract attention) we do NOT allow any illegal drugs on our buses. what people do off the bus is there own business.

that bieng said, if you go off the bus get all wacked out and then come back to the bus and you are disruptive to the community, then we have issues.
if the bus is in a town or festival, and some of the tribe smokes some weed, and comes back....thats not an issue. but no paraphanilia is allowed on tribe buses that cross borders.

now some buses are more lienient then others in this regard. our policy how ever is zero tolerance. by riding dirty you put everyone on board at risk of criminal prosecution. Many people have argued against this policy. I understand why, I also know that alot of illegal substances are socially acceptable in different states, countries , counties or provinces. lets say though, that the bus is in austin TX, yeah very tollerant, not a big deal if we get searched someone finds a pipe. Ok, so the bus leaves austin, heads down the I10 toward elpaso, we get stopped mid desert...next thing you know people are in prison for an indefinate amount of time....

THATS why our policy is strict in this regard. people always try to smuggle crap on, and so far its always come out....

now, I personally agree strongly with this policy. though other buses are lienient....and well history has shown, those buses tend to get impounded....then no more bus.

who is ever on the bus is a part of the tribe who makes, and enforces the rulles. Im not there I dont decide what you do. you do! your bus does.

thc 9 for example, over 10 grand went into building the pimpest bus I had ever seen, teh kids on the bus did NOT follow the rulles, they thought they knew better, they didnt blog, stay in contact, follow any advice others who had lived on the road for years have given them. and they lasted a month before the bus was destroyed impounded and years of work 10 grand and a lotta hopes were just thrown away, cause of some stupid arrogant decisions made by a group who really had no experience nor the intellegence to learn from those who do.


though as I have said before. I am niether on these buses anymore, nor do I have much more then minimal involvment with any of the organisation involved. though I will help new buses form and point them on there way, as well as OFFER my advice.

ive learned ALONG time ago what it takes to build maintain and keep a bus/es as well as a community going. I more or less work with the captains of each bus and organise multi counsels.

Waaaah hello!!!!!

I am in town for a few hours! I'm planing to get started on Rebirth as of May...I'll be going back to Montreal on May 1st and leaving for Ontario again within a couple weeks to get out to Blink's to start this thing.

I see Blink took care of the drug question. I have nothing to add! Do you have any more questions? It might be a while before i can answer as it is difficult for me to access the internet. I have plans of heading out west or maybe south to the states, i don't think i'm going to stay in Thunder Bay much longer...must be travelling on!

I am new to the forum and joined because I am curious about this thread specifically. I have read through the other Highway Child thread somewhat and just wondered what the specifics were for your rebirth plans currently. I see that you may not have internet access so let me know when you can.

 

I left the hermitage in Thunder Bay, i was getting so antsy....i'm on my way to NY to meet up with potential tribe and then hitting the road with a previous tribe member Alex...not sure where we're headed! If anyone is in the NY area and wants to meet up and talk Highway Child or whatever else send me a message!
