How likely do you think it is that Hip Forums is commonly used to track the possibility of illegal activity?

Is anyone aware of any charges have been brought against someone because of, or pertaining to, information or posts on this site?

If you'd be so kind, I'm not entirely tech-friendly...

What exactly does a proxy do and how does it work?

Thanks for the link, by the way.

Yes Hipforums is mostly likely being watched, so what? They'd still need evidence to charge you, a lot of things here are said in jest and aren't the entire truth. So unless your selling drugs online (and you'd have to be a moron), planning a terror attack (you'd have to be a dangerous psycho) or a Pedophile (which in my opinion should be caught) then you have nothing to worry about.

I disagree with Xac. That's the old "if your innocent you have nothing to worry about" argument which is complete and total misinformation.

Do you really think Big Brother plays by the Constitution in a "post 9/11" world?

The phrase "Post 9/11 world" ought to give you the answer to that.

Govt. maybe an asshole but they're not going to waste their time and money on me.

My thoughts are, what is this particular poster worried about? is he some revolutionary? or is he just worried about his dodgey online activities?

No no, you misinterpret the original post... It's not a "Oh boy, gotta dodge 'em" kind of thing. It's simply curiousity...

Does anyone know of any incident where the internet has lead to criminal charges because there are agents on a federal or state level who are actively searching the internet for issues pertaining to illegal activity? And if so, to what extent have those charges been carried?

I don't agree with "post 9/11" ways of governing, and I'm actually torn between what really IS in the best interest of the United States and its citizens and what isn't. But that's another discussion... Let the records show that I'm not looking for methods in which to escape criminal prosecution...

There have been countless instances of people being busted, when stuff they have said online has lead to some sort of investigation. So I suppose you best not give them anything worth investigating. For the most part none of us are big players, I am sure. I used to be and I can tell you that I wouldn't have set foot here at that time. I am assuming that most other 'king_pins' feel the same.

Police agencies these days don't even need a pretense to bust you. It doesn't matter whether you are not plotting a terrorist act or not doing anything illegal. Simply discussing ideas that are different than theirs, or just being different then them is enough reason for them to come into your home and take you away. But the police (although they will never admit it) are terrified of anyone who has friends or even of anyone who knows anyone else who will give them some support. On Hip Forums, I think everyone, to one degree or another supports everyone else's right to say what they want. So police agencies have a more difficult time monitoring our activities and are afraid to bust us even if they have a pretense.

personaly i dont see why they should even care with anyone of us i mean i have been on forums where i couldnt wait to get away where they actually were talking of seriouse things like killing hundreds of people and over throwing governments and such

so i hope they scared here but they really need to be scared of many others instead

Well, this is just meant to be humorous, but you might find some truth to it. When I see like a car pulled over by a cruiser to the side of the road, or if lets say two cops jump out of their cars to confront an individual or a group of individuals, and that's all the cops you see involved, it's probably something serious; but if another cruiser arrives on the scene for back up and then another and then another and then another, you can bet their probably busting some one for having spit on the street or maybe jay walking. Seems like that's the way police agents operate.

The point I'm trying to make is that even though there are web sites that are discussing things that are of a very serious and dangerous nature, it is still just as likely or possibly even more so that police agents are monitoring this site more thorougly, and in greater numbers then the the really dangerous ones.

I think we aught to send out a welcome to them, but if they are worth their own salt they won't respond anyway.

Not that they weren't doing it *before* 9/11...the only difference is now they admit it.

Well dodgy doesn't mean actually dodging, but whatever...lol

I'm an admin for a forum that partakes in only slightly illegal activities and in the past there have been consequences on similar forums in the form of law enforcement at meet-ups and what not.

People have also been emailed, but just going from online is a hard line to push. But, to be safe, that's why the forum I help admin is totally private and invisible to the outside world.

Others that aren't private get harrased, but no one is going to do JAIL time for anything posted online. Unless you're a peder-ass or planning some sketchy quasi terrorist activity, or selling drugs
