i truly believe that all "mental disorders" be they alzheimer's or schizophrenia are really tapping into other dimensions and realities. perhaps she tapped into one that was completely different than any of her experiences, and where she felt very uncomfortable and was frightened.

i'm not trying to discredit anyone's experience with any of these things, because each person creates his or her own reality, so whatever it is that you or someone you know and love has experienced, is totally real for you.
