I was at a music store, and I picked up a ukulele, and this guy walked past me and said, "Hmm, looks like we have a hippie here." I asked him what he was talking about and he said, "Well, look at how you're dressed for one thing. And also, you're about to play a ukulele." What the hell? Since when did instruments begin becoming "labeled"?
look it up on the net while you're online then there is an unlimited source of information so you dont have to look stupid!
Hahaha... this thread... wtf. Anywho... somebody told me the same thing while I was fiddling with a Gibson Dobro and I kind of had the same reaction. I have a strange relationship with slide. I always have to keep in mind the fret markers and positions... If I'm playing guitar, I have most of it in my head. People always tell me uke is harder to play than guitar . I find anything short scaled difficult to play. My fingers are quite long. I can barely play a mandolin. The only things that are comfortable to play, really, is my les paul and my Guild 12 string. My attack has gotten so quick/hard that if I try to do things like fingerstyle blues, I'll pop strings and snap bridgepins in half. I've only got two whole pins on my Martin. I do quite a bit of rhythm, palm muting, and percussion and I really need to switch to brass because of all the pins I go through.
I always thought it was interesting that hippies played acoustic guitars and not electric. Prolly cuz the acoustics were less expensive and you can take them everywhere?
my dad's a hippie. and he plays ukelele.. a really old one..... but if i had to associate any instrument with hippies........i'd say hand drums, acoustic guitars or tambourines.......
i think thats kinda funny really....why would you care? i would smile and maybe laugh and get to talking to the guy......
Hey wait....some of you are confused! Most of the hippies i know, including me, prefer electric guitar over acoustic any day! Yeah man
i like to play both... with the acoustic, you can go anywhere you want with it, open your case, play a song, its all good. with the electric, you have to get an amp, find a place to plug it in, have to get all the cords...but the sound can be amazing! I love to use various effects with my electric, always fun. btw, arent ukelele's something hawians play?
...hippie instrument?... thats crazy.....i play both acoustic and electric too... i like different types fro different moods and times tho... too hard a decision
^ jesus, hippies are poppin up all over here! how come i aint never met none of you people in illinois? dammit barrington is such a random little town . right, thread. erm, ukelele? that's not a hippie instrument, it's just something to play when you want to give yourself finger cramps and look silly
yes, there are. oh man, i know of one but i forgot it. the beatles used it in a couple song,s nad i think it was and indian instrument. does it start with an s? damnit! i'l come back when i remember. anyways, they are lables "hippie instruments" because they are used in "happy" songs... hm, which could be anything..... aha!
