Anyone know where I can find tales to tell the kids that reflect our values? Thanks much life and love
Well it depends on what your values are. If you're into animal rights then www.animalsong.org has some cool little stories, songs and such for children (check out the Red riding hood one ) TTFN Sage
Woodie Guthrie has a video for children. There is also "This Land Is Your Land", "The LIttle Twins" and "The Trollies". They all reflect good hippie values. As far as music, I like Mary Miche. "Earthy Tunes" has songs like, "Dirt Made My Lunch" and "Bugs In Your Bark". She also has "Nature Nuts", "Peace It Together", "Animal Crackers", "Kid's Stuff", and "Holly Daze". We don't have all of them, but I like what we have. HTH, Kathi
Oh, what a good thread! I don't really have the names of books off hand to contribute, but I really like the magazine All Round. They have a website. Check it out. My kids and I love it. Each edition has a theme, like inventing, how animals talk, shelter, being born, etcetera. Children and adults are invited to send in their drawings related to the next edition's theme, and their picture will be published! There's a comic strip about a hippy family that lives in an eco-friendly house in the sky and finds lost souls (but not in a religious way at all) , helping them return to their owners. They have all sorts of adventures. Each issue is full of experiments to do with the kids and information. There is no advertising and each issue is made and illustrated entirely by hand of 100% recycled paper. If I'm not mistaken, that's 100% post-consumer recycled paper. (There's a hippy value.) www.allroundmagazine.com I want more ideas, too. I hope people keep them coming. I am a children's book freak, so while I don't know if I can reccomend specific tales, I am familiar with decent books that aren't necessarily geared toward conveying hippy values, but at least don't violate mine.
I second the praise for All Round. as for hippie flavored books for kids there's Ferdinand the Bull,he's a bull who doesn't want to fight he just wants to enjoy nature and sniff flowers. The Lorax by Dr.Suess is a great enviornmentalist's tale. I'll probably think of more later,my daughter is past that read-to-me age and my son isn't quite there yet.
YES! Dr. Seuss has all kinds of good tales. The Lorax, for sure. Also, The Bigger Better Butter Battle, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, The Zax, The Sneetches. I love Dr. Seuss.
"Brush! Brush! Brush! Brush! Comb! Comb! Comb! Comb! Blue hair is fun to brush and comb. All girls who like to brush and comb should have a pet like this at home." -From 'One Fish two fish red fish blue fish' by Dr. Seuss. I always thought it was funny that this was read to us as kids and now so many people run around with uniquely-colored hair.
My kids love an old favorite from when I was a kid, it's a movie called The Point narrated by Ringo Starr with music by Harry Nillsen. It's about this kid who was born with a round head in a land where everyone has a point. so he's exiled to the pointless forest where he finds that everyone has a point, even if you can't see it at first. edited to add that it's really a much better story than my little synopsis makes it sound. Very cool, with a strong message, and entertaining for grownups and kids alike. Dr. Sears has a few books for children that my kids really like, too. We have one about pregnancy called Baby on the Way, one about a new sibling called What Baby Needs, and another really good one called You Can Go Potty (or something like that). His books show attachment parenting, breastfeeding and cosleeping as the norm. We also have a few books about animals nursing their babies, that my kids really like. I'd have to dig through the kids' bookshelf to find any titles because I just can't remember any of them right now. My dad always changed that to "all kids" instead of "all girls" and I do the same when I read it. LOL DH thinks I'm silly.
Kathi, great minds think alike. LOL! I was just thinking of My Hippie Grandmother. Sage loves it, (she has a hippy mama, though.) Here is a link to the book at Amazon.com for those who want to buy it, but one of our libraries had it. My Hippie Grandmother (Hardcover) by Reeve Lindbergh, Abby Carter http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0763606715/qid=1141533564/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/102-2040113-5759305?s=books&v=glance&n=283155 It reminds me, I have to write a review of this book, eventually.
Yeah, I think that book is great. Dakota loves it. Like I said, I sent it to my grandchildren and bought one for him. He definitely has a hippie mama. We got one recently that is the Country Roads song. It's just the words to the song but it has some great pictures in it. Cool hippie microbus. We also have "It's Just a Plant". We bought it on Amazon also but they have a web site. JustAPlant.com. It's a little over Dakota's head right now. But if you have kids who are a bit older and if you like to partake in a certain herb we're all familiar with, it's pretty good. The author is Ricardo Cortes. Tha family appears to be pretty crunchy. Kathi
be sure and have stories from all around the world, including Europe (often gets left out, and so do pale kids creating a dark people are nice and brave and I'm not mindset, sort of like overdoing the girlpower side in a home with boys) and for a great girl's book: The Paperbag Princesss. My son liked it, too. and Arlo Guthrie's Mooses Come Walking
Yeah, with the comic book in the liner notes! One of my Dad's favorite albums. It's on DVD now, I got it off Ebay!
Some -hippie- friends of my mother used to read scandinavian and irish fairytales to me when i was a kid, alot of the stories are about treating nature and people with great respect and love
Thanks for the link. That looks like a great book. What my kids probably need more than that is a "How to keep your hippy grandma in line when you take her out" book. I swear, when my kids complain about something that a teacher or a kid at school or a neighbor did, she comes up with the most awful suggestions about how they should handle it. I have to say, "Well, Grandma, that is a silly idea, and it's fun to joke about, but if the kids did that they'd get suspended or arrested." And she keeps trying to convince them to grow dreads. And she's says she'll take them clubbing when they're older. Sounds like a sequel...
Hey, Kathi, I went to look at It's Just a Plant and they are all sold out. I can't get one at Amazon for 4 to 6 weeks. But, I the site had the entire book online, it was pretty good. Wish I knew more cops like the ones in the story. I love the decorating in the people's house. I also want a pediatrician like that. Thank you for the reference. I'll get Sage and Lennon a copy as soon as I can. All of my kids have also liked to read living on the earth by alicia bay laurel. It is not written for children, but the line drawings are nice, and there are nice hippies on ever page. (Someone colored the line drawings in my copy.)
