What about other forms of art? Cave paintings come to mind, but this illustrates the point when abstract thinking developed. They created images of everyday life, such as animals they hunted, which is a first step. I doubt music, the abstract creations of sounds which are aesthetically pleasing to the ear, was created before paintings. Perhaps they imitated the sounds they heard, but not for entertainment purposes or b/c it "sounded good."
