mandyland sorry to burst your bubble but the truth had to be spread hmm... and about the sharks.... aparrently yesterday 2 sharks were spotted off our south australian coast! (within 60miles of my local beaches) And last year me and my mate went surfing at beaches and the day after their were reports of great whites being at the same beach. To be honest with you though your more likely to die from your toaster than a shark (not trying to make you scared of your toaster though) ..... so many encounters with dolphins and the odd seal! Thats a special experience Good music, artsy, surfing, laying on the beach... Sounds like my summer... which is just around the corner I'm excited You will love Australia no matter where you are...... def stay near the coasts though
yes mandyland and SE come to aus!!! w.a i think is good though lol i havnt really been to other parts..i think i might move to another part of aus...soooon
ahhhh...Im terrified of sharks! Dont they have any beaches where the sharks are netted off from coming too close?
not that I'm aware of their seriously not a large problem though.... most days their is a constant aeroplane flying over on shark patrol keeping the coast safe very very very small chance of you coming in contact with one
I live in Melbourne, and this is a REALLY great city! It is really arty, and there's always something beautiful and interesting to see It can get pretty busy too though Maybe you should be looking at queensland more? I went to Brisbane at the start of the year, and I loved that too! It's smaller, and the people are more laid back I think Yeh you would love the coastal lifestyle here I don't really live that close to beaches though good luck with whatever you end up doing
ohh...they have copters patroling for sharks? That would make me feel a lil safer about surfing there....coolio. [yes I said coolio....and yes I like the rapper...and yes I know Im a dork...whatever...Gangsta's paradise rocks! *have to say that in a napolean dynamite voice* teehee] From the sounds of it...I think Im just gonna have to fly my ass over to Oz and do some traveling there. I def. wanna hit up everywhere that youve all mentioned. Once I get there Ill prob decide on where to plant some roots. Ooooooo Im so excited!!!!!!!!!! Im prob gonna go in July...thats when my lease is up here. yaya!
Ummm, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't one have to have lived in Australia for 4 years before they can get citizenship? You cannot get Medicare there without citizenship either? New Zealand requires that you've lived there for 5....
how hard is it to get residency in oz or nz? we've also been considering a move down under within the next few years. we're massage therapists, so i figure we can find a nice tourist town and settle down. i'm just wondering about the requirements for residency and working if you're from the US.
I briefly researched it today. I googled "working visas in Australia". I went to a site that allowed me to take a free test to determine whether Id even be eliglble for a work visa...and Im awaiting the results. Apparently, you do have to have lived for 4 years in Australia before you can gain citizenship. It looks as though the hard part is going to be getting the work visa because my line of work is unheard of in Australia. Im gonna have to switch careers to get a work visa I think. Naked treeHugger: AS a massage therapist I think it would be easier for you to apply for one and get it.
Unfortunately no countries really look at "wanderlust" as a career path/choice....In that case I'm pretty screwed in terms of getting citizenship anywhere.
teehee. Yeah my job is pretty centered around my current location due to state funding. I work with children on the autism spectrum...and my paycheck depends on state loans, and grants. I dont thik any other country has autism services like we do here. Anywhoo....bummer. I might have to do the whole touristey hotel gig job. I dunno.
Well, do you enjoy farming at all? There's TONS of opportunities in both Australia and NZ. Usually they are work exchanges, in which you get food and a place to stay in exchange for help. Lots of the places don't require many hours of work though (around 20-30 a week), however farming is usually not "easy" work, it can be VERY satisfying though. Edit: I just realized you are living in Cal.....yea, you're best to leave, unless you're living in the Humboldt area (mainly Arcata). Ever consider heading north to the land of Oregon? I personally can't wait to leave the states again (just rehabbing my knees right now), but I've been to just about all but 6? states and I can tell you Oregon is by far the most "chill". Naturally there's assholes in all walks of life, but there seems to be more of an environmentally friendly approach to things here. Check out Eugene, Ashland or Portland if not the coast. (Plenty of autistic teaching/helping opportunities here too), in fact one of my friends was telling me he might be able to get me a job helping with autistic kids, as I can't do even the slightest manual labor. Whatever path you choose I wish you the best, just remember to stay safe, you're health is invaluable.
You Australian people: Where is the entertainment capital? Where do the films get made and produced? I live and work in Los Angeles, and have been considering moving to New Zealand (WETA Workshop is there), or Australia. WETA is a no-brainer, and I might be able to get in there through my connections. But AUSTRALIA, I don't even know where I'd start to look for work doing computer animation there... Any ideas?
Good to know. Lemme surf around over there for a bit. I've been thinking about heading to that hemisphere for a good while now... Thanks again! :cheers2:
Yeah farming would be rad! Ill look into that...thanks! I lived in Arcata for about a year! Yaya Humboldt! Its absolutely gorgeous there! I do miss it...but am looking for something new ya know? Ive been through Oregon, and yeah Portland and Ashland are pretty hip towns! Ive thought about moving there several times. A friend of mine just moved to portland and landed an autisim teaching job there...so I know the transition there would be easy for me. The west coast is a beautiful place! Theres nothing like the redwood beaches up here! Gorgeousness!!!!!! I just am feeling really compelled to go to Australia for some reason. Perhaps when I get there it'll all make sense...I dunno.
