Is there anything worse than a family dinner on a holiday, when your relatives are assholes?

Today is Thanksgiving Day in the US. I wish I could sleep through it and not wake up until tomorrow.

Yeah that would suck. But on the other hand it's one day out of a whole year where you have to spend a little bit of time with them... we'll all live.

Lol I forgot about other holidays... but still it's important to see your family, no matter how annoying they are.

  5. Yeah. I'm going to Scotland to visit mine next Saturday. Wish me luck!

Sounds like a fun trip. Enjoy yourself!

Easy for you to say. You don't know them. :(

They believe that thinking for yourself is one of the worst and most dangerous things that a person can do. I think it's one of the most important things.

To get through the meal without a disaster, all I have to do is go through about four hours without being honest with anybody about anything. Not easy for me to do.

Eh I have a similar situation too. But I know i'm a better and bigger person then them for just keeping quiet. I don't consider myself weak because I curb the real me to keep conflict at bay. Keep strong!!

That's probably the best way to look at it.

Besides, I have many things to be thankful for today, like alcohol, porn, good music, and not being a slave to a narrow, judgmental worldview. Those people don't have any of that to be happy about.

Sorry about your situation. That IS rotten. Eventually you'll be able to make holidays what you wish them to be, but I gather from many people you're not alone in dreading these days of family gatherings. That, sadly, tramples on the whole idea of holidays, I think.

I was thinking along the lines of this earlier: I guess I just lost that "holiday spirit" some years ago, but I just can't stand all the commercialization & sacharine sweet false cheer & that the whole world seems to stop thereby forcing you to stay at home & do nothing. It's like, what about those that don't have families or aren't close to them? Or their families live in another part of the country (or world even) & they can't afford to visit? Or those that are out on the cold streets or in shelters? Not to mention the huge amount of pressure to give everyone a gift of some kind especially in this economy? Or what if you don't spend a large part of the day w/your family because some have to work? Or, like the OP stated, you don't really get along w/them? So this means you gotta put your life on hold just because of some holiday you could care less about? And then there's the whole non Christian aspect to Christmas...though granted there's Chanukkah, Yule, Kwanza ect...I dunno, it all still just gets me a bit irrked...

Well, this Thanksgiving wasn't quite as bad as last year. Didn't stay as long. Maybe I had a little better attitude too. At least it's over.

Yeah, all that makes me feel very manipulated.

Don't you hate it when somebody refuses to give you any hints as to what they want for a Christmas present? It's like some kind of a test, where the mental effort and anguish you go through trying to guess what they will like is a part of the game. Another hoop to jump through. Sucks.

Think of all the good that could be done in the world if all the Christmas present money in the US was donated to charity. :(

I'm sure there are plenty of people who dread the holidays for some or all of these same reasons, but most don't feel free to express it openly. The media and popular culture make it clear that everyone is required to love the holiday period and be excited about it.

Media/marketing hype and manipulation regarding Christmas presents long ago passed the point of absurdity. What a clever trick, to get your own relatives to force you to spend more than you can afford. It's an immoral stroke of genius.

Now it's time for Christmas parties that no one wants to go to, but has to attend out of obligation.

it is quite the pain in the ass! and to top it off, i don't even have any way to watch all the christmas shows this year, which to me is one of the best parts of christmas! i hate the stress that comes with the holidays. i want to see my family members, but as you get older, you have not only your family to visit, but also your partner/spouses family to visit, and it just turns into a bunch of running from one family to the other. and buying gifts... no one expects me to buy them anything, but i would feel bad if i didn't, and i really do feel bad accepting gifts, even if i have bought something for them.

We are now in the time of the annual peak for domestic violence and suicide, as folks crumble under the pressure of trying to live the idealistic Christmas fantasy that is pushed on them by pop culture. They are also having to spend a lot of time with relatives that they choose to avoid for the rest of the year, usually for valid reasons. Guys, see this fucked-up situation for what it is, because knowledge is power.

And do your kids (if you have any) the favor of not lying to them about Santa Claus and Jesus. They have enough bullshit thrown at them already. Kids need to grow up hearing the truth, and with trust in their parents to tell them how the world really works, to the best of their knowledge.

The holidays don't make me want to commit suicide. This post does.
