A couple buddys and I've brewed a few times, although I'm not really sure of any tips I could give you... I might be able to help if you have any questions though

What kind are you thinking of making?

Just bottled up a batch today. If your thinking of doing kits then it's a piece of piss. I'm not expert so, but I can offer the following advice.

1-Bottle it don't barrel it, it taste better IMHO, you don't have a big barrel that you can't disturb sitting round the house and it keeps forever so you never get the mad "OMG the beers on it's way out and I've got 2 gallons left" followed by a very bad morning. Washing/sterilising/filling/capping bottles takes much longer but its worth it.

2-Sterilise the fuck out of everything, I'm using milton tablets atm made up to about triple there recommended strength (they are for sterilising baby stuff.) then rinse it loads.

3-I've never bothered with a hydrometer, I own one, and occasionally use it, but only for entertainment purposes. I can't say this is a recommendation but I've never gone wrong (I just wait till i think its done, then give it another day), but I'm only interested in cheap beer so you may want to consider this one for yourself.

4-At all times remember how phenomenaly cheap your beer is, I think I once did a batch that came out to about 12p a (UK) pint, and when your pouring gallons of water into your brewing bucket think to yourself that in a week all this water will have turned into beer. This mindset basicly means you don't give a toss when you make a slightly rough batch of beer, because it's beer, and its cheap as fuck.

check out charlie papazian's book "the complete joy of homebrewing" it is essentially a must-have

also, once you have an understanding of the basic processes, you'd be far better off asking specific questions in a homebrewing forum rather than here. at a homebrewing page you'll get tons of interested, largely knowledgable people willing to answer questions.

here you might get two, or if you're lucky three or four people who might answer your questions - and they may be wrong, or "less" right than answers you'd ask at a forum mostly for dedicated brewers

for your first brew i would suggest not using a kit, but i would also suggest using an all-extract recipe

There are some good replies here. I know I'm dredging up old threads { i'm drinking old bourbon but more on that later} . +1 one on the book great info in there. Although I say for your first batch start with a kit. It is easy and only takes about 6 weeks start to finish. Be aware that home brew tends to have more kick than naty light. When I was a hard drinking collegiate I had my own personal brewery putting out about 50 cases of " the Beer of Death" a year. At the time I was drinking about 18-24 cans of America's finest swill 5-6 times a week. My brewery had the six pack club where if you could finish a six pack you were in the club. There are 5 members of the B.O.D. 6 pack club. There is only one member of the 12 pack club. What ever you like about beer you can make it cheeper and better your self.

If you have any ?? I will try to help you out the best I can.

Home brewing is excellent fun. I have made mostly wines. From plum to dandelion. The dandelions are quite obviously free so it makes it all the more better.

I feel no need to explain the process, as it has been covered pretty well already!
