hi all i wanted to setup a small homenetwork the one box is a xp home edition OS and the other one Linux they both conect to the internet through a router if it just Linux it is easier to setup but i am stuck trying to make a network with windows. thanks in advance
You want a home network with a Linux box and a Windows box, we have established that much. Both machines should plug into a router and work automatically (or little effort) using DHCP addressing. Unless, are you confusing the term "router" with the term "modem"? router: connects to a modem and allows you to plug multiple machines or 'nodes' to share a resource. modem: connects a node, machine, or router to the Internet via a media such as a phone line or TV cable What is your primary objective with this network? Erm, what services do you want to have available?
thanks for reacting adderal assasin my goal is to browse the file directory of the Linux box i need to let windows know how to reach the php directory i read on the debuntu forum about samba but to be honest i dont know how to translate it in windows thanks in advance
Samba can be configured to set up file sharing of any file system or directory you want. It will share to Windows, Linux, and OS X, among others. First you want to configure the server. This involves assigning it to a domain and specifying what to share. You should also set up a username/password for security reasons. The samba username can be different (or same) from the system username. Then setup the Windows box on that same domain. I've done this by editing the registry. After that, it's all point and click. Here's some goodies: Samba http://samba.netfirms.com/ Webmin - an extremely useful tool for anyone with a web browser! http://webmin.com/ What distro will you run?
