im thinking about giving myself home made dreads. ive read aboubt different ways to do it, but i figured i'd ask for the opinion of people who already have them, rather than a website. should i do it all-naturally, do the whole wax regimine, or neither?

def go natural, theres no other longterm option. its not about getting them to dread, its about keeping them from getting to be one big dread.

I am going to move this thread. In the sticky, it states that all dreadlock questions will be redirected to the Knotty Know How Thread.

    Thank you.

Read through some the stickies here and you can pretty much find anything you're looking for.

    Happy dreading!

I've got dreads to the back of my knees...
Listen, natural is the only way.
Forget wax, back combing, tangling and any other bull. You always end up with a tangled mess, and they fall out.
This is the fact..... Straight hair doesnt dread.
    Forget it.
Curly hair, just needs to be left to its own devices... stop brushing and just pull apart into the natural curls that it wants to go in. My hair went from curls to dreads in about 2 months... none have fallen out, and they are all relatively thin... I've had them for nearly 15 years.

this I agree with, after having tried the backcombing and wax routine on my child's hair. Dreads did not start forming until I left it alone and let the backcombing all fall out.
this is total BS. If my kid who has silky, straight red hair can have dreads, anyone can.

Oh really? That's weird, because I had straight hair and I've got some pretty solid locks...naturally, without backcombing and wax.

How do you explain this phenomenon?

How long are they and how long have you had them.

Sorry , but i dont think they'll last the duration.
Its just that very curly hair wants to dread. Straight hair dont.
The tribals and rastas who dread their hair all have curly or afro hair.
You dont see dreads in tribal cultures with primarily straight hair.... just dont happen..

Now i'm not being a tribal purist or whatever, just that everyone i knew who dreaded their hair and had straight hair... the dreads only lasted a few years.
Its something to do with the actual hair and how curly hair wants to curl and bend, whereas straight hair dont.

I hope your dreads do last and you proove me wrong!![IMG]

what about the Vikings? The Celts? The Huns? The "barbarians"? They all had matted up dready kind of hair. Everyone had dreads of one sort or another before combs were invented, I would suppose, either that or burn/singe it with a burning stick down close to the scalp.

^^ haha that or cut their hair off with a knife or something.
    - the whole things about straight hair not being able to dread... i have straight hair and my hair dreaded. and i dont think they are commin out... i just dont see how u think that once the dreads are solid that just because we have straight hair they are going to fall out in a couple of years. but maybe u know someone that this happened to. idk. im sure we will all prove u wrong in a few years haha
    have a grateful day :) peace~

My dreads are past my shoulders and I have had them for almost exactly two years. My boyfriend also has dreads. He has straight hair as well. He's had his for almost six years.

I think you're being stereotypical, which is sad...I feel sorry for you.
