How common is "hooking up" in college?

I am trying to understand the concept of hooking up and how common it is in college today. I realize there is lots of drinking and sexual activity in college, but I guess I didn’t realize to what extent.

I was never one to hook up. I preferred relationships and have only been with a few women. I never lived at college, but my girlfriend did for 4 yrs. She has had "sex" with 3 guys before me. But her definition of sex is different than mine. She only considers vaginal intercourse sex. I guess I'm old fashioned, but I would consider oral sex and anal sex to be sex, and naked dry humping and any hand usage/penetration to qualify as sexual activity, too (though more of a grey area, I guess). She considers that stuff "hooking up" or "fooling around". She said she hooked up about 12-15 times in college, sometimes with friends of hers, sometimes with people she met a few hours before. So I was a definitely a little surprised by what she told me.

So I guess I have a couple of questions:

Should I consider sexual activity other than vaginal intercourse as sex?

How common is this behavior among college women today?

Is 12-15 "hook-ups" (oral sex, sexual touching, naked dry humping) over a 4 yr period a high/low/normal amount for college women? (Should I be concerned that my girlfriend can’t even recall the exact amount?)

Am I being naive to think that most women (in college or otherwise) don't have this many experiences by their mid-twenties?


I don’t mean to be sexist and focus only on women’s behavior, because I am sure men do it just as often. I guess I am just trying to understand my girlfriend’s concept of hooking up and whether her behavior is typical of most college women.

 

12-15 is extremely low. I myself don't like hooking up, but my first semester of college, I could "hook up" with a different girl every night if I wanted to.

 

for a girl, i'd say 12-15 is a bit high in four years. not that it isn't ok, but i think that number is above average, especially if it's intercourse we're talking about and not oral sex. i think more and more women are at least trying anal now too. tons of women i've spoken with have done it at least once.

 

You're crazy! I never hooked up with anyone from college. I dated a few people but never hooked up. 12 imo is a high amout a people for a girl to have had sex with in a lifetime...nevermind just in college.

hooking up just always sounded kinda slutty to me. What's the point?

What if a girl is a genuine slut and then changes? She has sex with lets say 50 guys and then becomes a born again virgin. You shouldn't judge someone from the past, but what they do now, and WHY.

Who cares how many she's been with, unless she has STD's. If she's true now and was only having careless fun before, is that not her right? As was yours. If one cheats, that is different, then no rights be granted. But lets say she just had fun before you, to find you? Perhaps she is done with the boys and ready for the men

I've never hooked up with anyone, ever, casual sex/whatever else isn't my thing. But if someone else chooses to do all that then who am I to judge? We all have our own ideas of what having fun means. :tongue:

I have no problem with what other people do. I am not judging anyone. Just for me, I prefer not to sleep with people I don't think I have something with.

 

Not all American girls are easy. I hate that assumption. It makes me feel very uncomftrable and unsafe in forgein countries because guys think they can just come up and grab you after you've had a few drinks and you're not going to care because you're an easy chick fromt he states. YUCK!

But it's very easy if you try. Especially if you're attractive and have a sexy accent.

There is a whole geometry of casual heterosexual sex. Essentially, at the top of the pyramid are rich guys and slutty girls (about 2% of the population) who have a lot of sex. The rest of us is either competing for that top bracket, or not in the game at altogether.

Beleive me, if it was easy, I would know.

People have statistically less sex in the U.S. than in most of the Third World, for sure. And my experience confirms that statistic.
