Lately, I've came up with some amazing songs on my guitar. I cant write lyrics. When I try, its like something a little kid sings on the way to school. So does anyone have any tips? They're much appreciated.
Songs sung by playing little kids would seem like the very essence of freedom, and a bautiful thing I'd think...Doesn't have to be good or bad, it's what it is, and its fun. But i think i know what you mean, i can get kinda awkward. I don't know what the song is like... is it funky? is it rockin? is it a love song? how's the mood? the vibe? My tip would be, start humming with it, or write down some power words, (things you think it should be about, and keep playing and staring at it... What comes to mind when you play it etc... i hope this helps you some, but I don't write a lot of lyrics anymore. these days, i'm more focused on the music, and there are others who work on the words now... I love instrumental music, so if you're willing to share it? or that finished product, i'd love to hear it. HAVE FUN! Peace
I wouldn't force anything. I don't play music but I'm a serious collector and conneseuir(sp?) I'm also a bit lazy otherwise i woulda looked that up. Anyhow...just wanted to say, don't feel obliged to layer lyric on a good tune. Some people, myself included are of the opinion that if you can get your message across without saying a word...you're showing a good degree of talent! 2cntz. BTW that's an insane sig Neo-Hippie.
write what you know. if you its not real and from you, it will come off as fake. its something that comes from with in and sadly can't be told in a formula...
My tip is to own it. Whatever you're singing, own it. Don't give any ground. Be there in the moment. More often than not the words themselves aren't as important as the honesty heard in the voice. And you don't have to try to be honest -- you're already you. Write words. Sing, don't think.
Thanks for the help everybody. Still cant write shit though. I guess I just got to go and break into Maynards house and still his shit I would post some of my stuff up but I have no way to record it. Im merly just a kid with a guitar and a pen and paper. Im not playing amatuer shit though. Thank god....
on that note, Listen to Pete Townshend's (The Who) song; Guitar & Pen It's like a step by step lesson for you Good luck, and keep at it!
In the immortal words of Nike: "Just do it." By that I mean, just write without worrying about whether or not it sounds good (which, because it is in our nature to want to sound good, is not as easy as it sounds). Just focus on writing a song instead of THE SONG - you know, the one that's so great it will blow everyone's minds away. Once you've finished it, sing it to yourself several times. Don't immediately judge it; let it sit with you for a while. If you really don't like it what you've written, you can always change it.
there is really no "how to" to writing lyrics. alot of Lyrics from songs were taken out of Poetry that that specific artist had written at one time. writing ANYTHING be it lyrics, poetry, stories, is all about Emotion Imagination and the passion to do it. so the only advice I can give you is use your head and jot down what you come up with. good luck!!
Worst comes to worst, you can do instrumental songs, and that's not bad at all; take a look at bands like explosions in the sky; if your music does the job by itself, and it can, then you don't need words. Try playing a feeling. If anyone hasn't noticed yet, I fucking love semicolons
heres how you right lyrics: Submerge your self in the waters of creativity with no will to survive. You might emerge from the merky abyss with clarity in your eyes.
i would much rather submerge myself in waters of lake minatonka. and emerge with a jheri curl and purple velvet pants.
This is how you write good lyrics: First, learn poetic theory. Learn the psychology behind the reasons that those who were great were great and learn the rules like the back of your hand and become familiar with them. Then you can bend and break them to your own taste. There is a theory behind all art forms and all great artists either learned them, or already had it in the back of their minds without realizing it... Either way, the idea is to know it good so it's in the back of your head; it's part of you. The back of your head is for stuff that you know so well, you don't even have to think about it. When your in a new town, you have to think while your driving to get around and not get lost...your using the front of your mind to remember street names or picture a mental map. When you've lived in that town for a long time, you can think about anything in the world and still get where you need to go. The same goes with creativity: If you learn the concepts of theory behind your art form well enough that they become part of you and are in the back of your mind, you can then use the front of your mind for your creativity. If your new to theory it will help, but be patient because it will take time to fully develop your voice, and if you try too hard to integrate your newly learned theory concepts or rely too heavily on theory you may sound uninteresting, uninspired or fake. You must write from your self to be truly successful and real sounding, but when you take tried-and-true theory and learn it well enough for it to become part of you, your then able to utilize all the techniques you learned in your own unique creative way that is a reflection of your self. This is how you make art that's inspired and original, but still connects with many people.
