My dad keeps yelling at me about how i should be a lawyer. i want to be an artist, or do something w/ languages, but he keeps pointing out, how do i make enough money to live on that? and he has a point. i am not materialistic, but he makes it seem like ill b living on the streets if i become a commercial artist. but ive looked on these boards and so many of u manage to b other things without being lawyers, or doctors, or accountants. my main complaint about being a lawyer is... well, has anyone heard the song little boxes? here:

Little boxes on the hill side, little boxes made of ticky tacky.
Little boxes, little boxes, little boxes all the same.
There's a green one and a pink one and a blue one and a yellow
    one,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky, and they all look just
    the same.

And the people in the houses all went to the university
Where they were put in boxes, little boxes, all the same.
And there's doctors and there's lawyers, and there's business
    executives
And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just
    the same.

And they all play on the golf course and drink their martini dry
And they all have pretty children and the children go to school
And the children go to summer camp and then to the university
Where they all get put in boxes and they all come out the same.

And the boys go into business and marry and raise a family
In boxes, little boxes, little boxes all the same.
There's a green one and a pink one and a blue one and a yellow
    one
And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just
    the same.

do u see what i mean? i dont want to be made out of ticky tacky. i dont want to b another life just... i dont want to say wasted, but thats the only word i can think of. i would love to live on a commune, meditate, do work that i like doing, etc. but i dont know if there are any communes, or if people make money doing work they like to do anymore. and dad, says i have to make enough cash, and he may be right.

    please help me out.

I saw that you're thirteen, and I'm not going to harp on you for that; I never appreciated when those older than me made a point of rubbing it in my face.

Anyway, "when I was your age" I sincerely put a lot of effort into the belief that I one day would enter in to the law field. Then I began working with those who shared the same interest and those that where actually in the field. Assholes. Their values and concerns do not reflect those of the artist or the commune lifestyle you seek. Of course there are always exceptions, as there are to everything, but I wouldn't wish your father's ideals upon anyone, especially you.
Ultimately, please remember, for the next 4-7 or to 8-9 (who knows just how many years)...

... Things will seem like you've been screwed from every angle and you've no options, then maybe the next day the entire stituation changes! So just don't give in to others and stay true to your values and wants, and realize that you don't need to realize.

As for your actual career, relax. You may not know ( nor may your dad) just how many jobs there are out there-despite mr.bush-. You're not doomed. You're job should be one that you :
    1. enjoy
    2. can do supplement your life
Money is just the tie between your freedom and """'the system"""'"

So,relax,,,take a bath, and go see some live music> that'll help

    life and love

Personally at that age you should not even be worried about that right now, then when your older make your decision, my entire life groing up I wanted to be a cop, mainly just to harrass people and beat them with a stick and shoot them from time to time. When I came to the age that I could join the academy, plus I had several refferences from several Sgt.'s and Lt.'s on the local force which was what was going to get me started, I have a promised job, plus I would start out being paid more than most. I changed my route, and started thinking I wanted to be in the air force since I love to fly, I went through every test, took my physical, and backed out at the last moment so I could stay around my family. I then started taking courses in college, now I have a shitload of cerifications on all types of shit and I am doing something completely different. What I am saying is you will change your mind time and time again, especially at that age, or you might just end up in the end doing what you dreamed all along, either way there will always be someone there to tell you that you won't make it, and you can't do that, and your not good enough, for me thats what drove me. I was always called the stupid one in class that would never amount to nothing, because I kept my mouth shut and minded my own business, never really went after anything. Even my parents said I was a walking mistake, now I am pretty much set, and at a young age so I have plenty of living left, and I have the ability to change my carrer at anytime I want.

There is time to do more than one thing during your life....the one bit of good advice my dad gave me was that you only have to decide what to do next, and not any further than that if you don't want to.

Aslo, consider the fact that not all lawyers live in the suburbs with their families....some might live in a loft in the city, some may be artists when they aren't at work....there are no rules that force you to live a certain way, you do the job and your time outside of it should be your own.
