I have an mp3 player, mainly because I don't care about brands. But now I'm beginning to wish I had an ipod, simply because there are so many more choices for ipod accessories and they seem to be the most likely to upgrade with the years.

I think everyone has theirs because they like it, not because of the brand. I got mine because I have itunes and ipods are just easier than mp3 players.

I have a Creative Zen XiFi2, and I'm not let down by anything about it. There are tons of accessories for it. The Zen is way easier than an Ipod... let me explain. You put in a CD, you extract songs as MP3 format... no need to convert to another format. You drag the songs over to the Mp3 Player in its ready to go. No audio loss either.

I prefer my Zen with its memory slot too (something the Ipod will never have). And only recently has Apple decided to install an FM tuner. I've had that for years on the various Creative MP3 players I've owned.

iPods are are easier. You put in a CD, it extracts itself, you press "sync"... Music time.

I have an 8g ipod nano. I've had it for a couple years now. I usually don't leave home without it. Need a bigger one tho.

I bought an ipod shuffle a few weeks ago and the headphone wires already have a small tear in them so only one earphone works. I'm impressed with how small it is and how well it works, but it needs to be more durable.

I don't have a mp3 player. I've heard an Ipod before and am not impressed. I have a friend who has a mp3 (who's brand escapes me at the moment) that blows the Ipod away because it plays FLAC files in addition to Mp3's. A Sony Walkman playing a high bias (type II) tape recorded on a good quality tape deck from vinyl played on a decent turntable blows any Mp3 player out of the water!

A FLAC file sounds as good as a CD because FLAC uses a different compression algorithm from Mp3 that upon extraction yields a sound wave identical to the original CD. Mp3 compression attempts to identify portions of the waveform that are "unimportant" and eliminates them.

A CD takes snapshots of the analogue waveform 44,000 times per second as a posed to an analogue medium witch preserves the waveform continues manner. Human hearing can perceive sound up to 20,000 cycles per second. A wave cycling 20,000 times per second would only be sampled at approximately 2 points of its arc. A wave cycling at 10,000 times per second would be sampled at approximately 4 points of its arc. One can easily infer from that data that the sound from a CD grossly misrepresents the actual analogue waveform!

The decreasing points of sampling as frequency increases is responsible for the harshness of the High end on CD's. It's the reason that cymbals sound "crunchy" on CD's.

The fidelity of cassette tapes however is limited by their slow speed 1 7/8 IPS (inches per second) the slower the tape the lower the upper frequency limit is and the higher the noise floor (tape hiss). Reel-to-Reel tape in recording studios runs at 15 or 30ips. The fidelity of cassettes can be improved through the use of Dolby noise reduction wich boosts the high end on recording and takes it back down on playback thus almost entirely eliminating tape hiss. Also high bias tapes that respond to higher frequency's more then lower ones then played back with a corrective filter can increase the frequency ceiling. Even with all that the slow 1 7/8ips tape can never equal vinyl playback. But I find the lower fidelity of cassettes far more graceful than the harshness of CD's (if I had to choose one over the other).

It's important to remember that the fidelity of analogue playback is effected greatly by the quality of the equipment unlike digital. A Walmart CD player will sound nearly as good as a Marantz CD player hooked up to the same amp and speakers. That does not hold true with analogue. Don't say that vinyl sucks because it sounded bad on your fathers console stereo with a BSR turntable with a low compliance ceramic cartridge with a quarter on the head shell and a worn out needle!

So I'll prefer a good walkman with good quality tapes to an Ipod any day!

my ipod is a piece of shit! I bought it brand fucking new and a year and a half later it just died, it wont turn on for shit. I tried reseting it and my old lady's cousin use to work for apple and she couldn't even get it to turn on. It's been shoved in my computer drawer for about 2 years now....damnit you guys just reminded me how pissed off I am about that. How are the zune players? I was considering getting one but since the Ipod nanos are so damn cheap now I don't know what to get.
