What is an important thing to do is scope out spots: like scope out public restrooms at places where you can (at ease of restriction) take full wash ups to be clean as apart of your success as a bumb. I beg to differ, as I've been through many many days of being a bum, by choice (why pay rent somewhere when it's nice enough to sleep outside?). Public bathrooms you can clean yourself in are a definite must...if your a bum with a job a gym membership is very helpful in that field. Learn the best dumpster diving spots. Don't sleep in sketchy areas of downtown. Park your tent in a park. Find somewhere with good sized public lockers to keep your shit in when your not using it. Have a street performing skill. DON'T BEG! And don't take up residence in homeless shelters when there's people out there who need them far more than you do. Know your bus routes.
