your best bet is to use a credit card, debit card or even better a visa travel card you can purchase at any AAA. These will get you the best rates. I'm heading over there next month but have been there 5 times and have run the gambit on the exchange game mike

    Yes, Jon is right.
Using ATM machines is the best way, that's what I do.
But remember that each time you draw out some
money you will be charged a small transaction fee and
if you keep drawing out bits here and there the fee can
soon build up. So it's wise to take out large amounts
and leave half in your hotel room to avoid paying
    all those pointless bank charges.
(this does not apply in your own country though.!)

I'd go to Travelex which is outside the train station and across the bridge, street, tram tracks, buses, construction, etc., etc. NOT the GWK Travelex which is inside the station. They are a rip off. If you have a AAA card Travelex giveas you a discount and they have decent rates. w/o AAA card just peek around you'll find a lot of choicesl

buy the travel card from AAA, you can deposit your money at AAA and they give you a atm card that gives you the same good bank rates and if you lose it you can get it replaced faster than a credit card just like travelers checks. but don't use travelers checks, they are a rip off with all the surcharges have fun!!

From MY experience nobody beats GWK for buying Euros with Dollars. Last time I exchanged US $500 cash I was charged 5.1% in fees and commisions. The currency exchanges along Damrak charge as much as 10% in fees and commisions.

Travelex is the new name for Thomas Cook- also a high priced exchange house.

Some people say use the Dutch banks and postoffices to buy Euros, I'm not sure of the rates.

If you can swing a bank account with a linked ATM card, your fees and commisions are closer to 2.5% when buying Euros with Dollars. That's a savings of USD 25/1000 compared to GWK costs.
