I would like to start a group or some kind of organization that defends animal rights here in Puerto Rico. There are too many strays, abandoned, sick and abussed animals here and nobody is doing anything to help. The humane society is nothing more than another animal shelter that euthanises most of the animals that are brought in. People need to be educated on many animal issues and i want to take part of this. I have some friends that are willing to help start an organization but i trully have no idea on where to start. I would like to be able to open a farm for rescued animals, a place where no puppy will be put to sleep because theres no more room. does anyone know how i could get started on this. it is serious to me and i am determined to see this happen.
You need to spread material encouraging people to adopt abandoned animals, so that the humane society wouldn't need to euthanase them. Perhaps start an "adopt a pet" program. And most importantly, find ways to raise funds and collect donations from reputable companies. Lots of people around the world have bought properties and turned them into independent animal shelters...I suppose a big step for you would be to find a way to get a property. A wealthy animal lover perhaps? In Australia we have the RSPCA which is a government organisation, if the humane society is a government organisation you should lobby or write to the government to increase funds and improve the service. If it is not, maybe they need more public support or more funds, and you could contribute by advertising and fundraising. Good Luck, its a really good cause, and dont give up. I would also suggest writing to organisations like this one for advice: http://www.awan.us/
silent...have you thought about pming fgwolF who posts in Pets and Animals. I believe he rescues animals, perhaps he could offer advice. Good luck!
Just a thought: do an internet search for "no-kill shelter" ... there are alot of links that will turn up of other organizations like the one you are wanting to start. I would contact them if I were you .... explain what you are trying to do, and see if they can offer you any advice. They have the experience and knowledge because they once started out new, too. They should be able to point you in the right direction and tell you what it will involve. I think it's admirable what you have resolved to do, and hope you see it through.
