Hello Everyone, let us balance on the line between dreams and reality...

If YOU were given 50 acres of land, all of which is lush, fertile forest in the lower mountains, and may or may not choose to access the fire hydrant by the road for water, hook up electric lines, and dig a well, you have very little money, but a burning desire to create a commune or a tribe. you may be as modern or as primative as you like, as long as you stay within the budget you create.

How would go about this to make it happen, make it grow, and maintain it?

lush land says there's water available...find a source (spring, seep)and develope enough so that you can have drinking water (beaware that spring water is alive - i.e. has organisms contained living within,,,,most city water is sterile, not pure much the opposite but sterile, and one who is used to depending upon an outside protective system may need to build up their own inherent immune protective system). If there is enough of a flow, buy or build a holding tank so that you can gather the water. Buy a tank that will fit on an old truck a trash pump, and or 2; 1 for clean water and one for water not used for drinking (course you must use the 1 for drinking water only for that purpose...lol) - and now you have no need to spend for well ($2,000min>$15,000) nor bring in a hydrant , and get the system more involved than you might like them to be,.
A generator keeps you off grid...tools are better than something already built that Will break, batteries and a good firehose on a reel, and you come much closer to keeping your costs down plus saving soooo much at start up.
But first, most important thing is to move and live there....the only way you Know what you Need and may want badly enough to part with the legal tender is to be there, plus you get a lot more done.
And people..... make sure that they are sufficiently of like mind that you are on the same page with what you consider necessities, and that they are not takers but people who fly the flag of tanstaafl (there ain't no such thing as a free lunch), and take joy in the working hard to make things happen. And do Not wait for them to appear but empower yourSelf by Doing.....synchronicity will show the way for them to come or what you next moves should be....so pay attention (be still, listen - act).

    Have at it !

    Blessings along your Way

    Namaste

Thanks for the quick response... what legal things must one do to live there?

What can you do or not do on private properity?
Such as hunt and trap critters for food, please elaborate.

have to do your own homework on that...each state is different and you do not give what state you speak of.....and hearsay is just that.
In community one finds that one needs to go the extra...which includes finding out what the regulations are on federal, state, and local levels...and when you find out on your own then there is liable to be much less erroneous information.

yeah, I agree... I did some research on that just after the post, and have been researching self sustaining living the past few years. I made this thread to get other ideas to add to my list. Living this way in a commune or starting one is all I think about and prepare for. Recently, I've been putting together the pieces and working on something... hopefully soon it'll become a reality.

Dang people, with all the posts on communal life, I thought you'd jump at the chance to create your own place and share things you'd like to see happen. I guess not... too bad... I looked foward to hearing your ideas.

i would love to start a commune:)

we would grown our own food...

    find pure water..make a well?

    go solar..

it's very easy to live in harmony with mama earth:)

just would take the city clicker some time to get used to it.

we are made to live off of the land.

if anyone wants to start one or knows of something good, let me know:)

    much love to you all..

Starting a commune isn't easy: it's quite a challenge, but it certainly has its rewards. I've helped start one in Texas, which is now over a year old. Check it out at echowood.org

Thanks, I've seen the site many time's the past year, it looks nice, but my uncle lives in Texas and says it's very hot there. People do things in the early am, sit inside in the a/c during the day, and come out in evening if it's not too hot. Besides, I don't want to deal with the rattlesnake's and tornado's.
I'm sure you know better than I, but I don't see myself living down there, even though you got some excellent bass fishing.

I know full well how much work it takes, but it's the kind I want and will do one day. It's different working for a common goal and way of life with friends, over working for the man, who steals your cash as fast as you make it.

    Thanks for the reply,
    Peace

Well, I just wrote a letter to former commune leader Charles Manson and asked his advice on this delicate subject.

Not to be lazy as I await his response, I am gathering lots of mind-altering substances, books on mind-control and mass hypnosis and searching for easy-to-get-in / hard-to-get-out-of pieces of real estate.

I saw a cool site that made a Solar Water Heater using either glass or plastic bottles. The water would slowly move through them from one side to the other and pour into a container warm enough to shower with.
Best part, it won't cost you anything except nails. All you need is scrap wood for a frame, bottles, pvc piping or tubing, and a container, maybe a tap rigging to release water. You can find all that on garbage or recycle day.
I'd also catch the water down the drain, filter and use again.

One very important issue is commune structure
i think people are afraid to discuss this topic lest anyone would start talking about power trips, mind control, jim jones, and the like. However, structure and ground rules are extremely important if one wants their community to survive into the foreseeable future (and even then nothing is gaurenteed). This is an area that i havent seen too much discussion in, when i was on hipforums in the past. Does anyone have any useful comments or advice, or even links to it?
