Well, since you're only 14, I say give it a go. You might change your mind about not wanting to do it once you do. If you don't like it, I'm sure you can quit the squad. Just try it and try to have fun. It's never bad to try things out when you're young.

I don't know how these things work, however if your really sure you don't want to do it and you won't regret it or resent your friend, why not ask the leader if your friend can take your place?
if the answers going to be a no (as been stated) give it a go and see how you feel

If you really want to give it a whirl, go for it. I personally loved it when I was a cheerleader (despite my evil coach and some of the bees with itches on my squad), and later on, I became a cheerleading advisor for the squiggies (the 5-6 year old little girls) and had a blast with that.

But I'll tell you, I made some major enemies when I made the squad. People who I thought were my friends turned on me. Some of those girls (the ones that didn't make it) were brutal. Tripping me in the halls, threatening me, it was ridiculous!

I had fun too but quit after my sophmore year because the actual girls on the squad were so mean and for other reasons. None of my friends made it either and I didn't make show cheer, which is what I really wanted where you just went to competitions and didn't have to do the stupid football and basketballs games. I quit my junior year because you can't do two varsity sports in the same season so I chose track and cross-country.

To the orginal poster-go for it and have fun. You wouldn't have gone to tryouts if you didn't want it.

There was always a group of kids at my school like you would would isolate themselves from the general population.

During lunch break they'd lay out in the fields among the Chicory, Goldenrod, and Queen Anne's Lace and tune out the world [IMG]

Secretly I always hoped one of them would roll over some cockleburs or stinging nettles [IMG]

Well okay, here's the thoughts of a girl who is still in high school:

Here's the thing. This EXACT thing happened to me. Freshman year, my friend LOVED cheerleading, but was completely shy, wanted to cheer, and asked if I would do it with her. I was never the cheerleader type really, I had done it in elementary and middle school, but at the same time, my whole life I had danced at a studio outside of school. And that was more my thing.

At the time, I was still a student at a studio. But I could see my friend really wanted it, and I thought for sure she would make it, because, she honestly was good. I figured even if I did make it (which wasn't doubtful, dancers and cheerleaders have some similar qualities), I would do it with her just so she would be happy. So when we tried out, long story short, I made it and she didn't.

I didn't know what to do. She was really upset, but still encouraged me to do it. But I didn't want to. I was willing to do it with her, but not alone. So I thought about it for a long time, and decided I wasn't going to do it. There was a dance team, and tryouts were coming up soon, and I wanted to do that. So I quit the cheer squad.

I ended up joining the dance team, have been on it for 3 years now, and this upcoming season I will be the captain/coach. I also still dance at a studio, but am a teacher there now.

Not doing cheerleading and doing dance like I wanted to was a good decision. If I had done cheerleading, I wouldn't of had time for teaching at my studio (with dance, I've worked out a schedule where I leave 20 minuteds early), and I just wouldn't of had fun because it's not what I wanted to do.

Your only in high school once, and these are the years that you will always remember. Make them as fun as you can, and don't be pressured to do something that you don't want to do. Because then there's a chance you won't have room to do something that you do want to do. My advice is to just tell the coaches that if they won't let your friend in after you quit, then that's their loss, because they'll be the ones with one less girl on the team.

Anyways, that's just my advice. Hope it helps :)

That's what happened with my best friend and I and she wanted it soooo bad and the only reason I made it is because I had been taking advanced dance classes since I was in elem school. Funny thing is that I didn't make the dance team and I REALLY WANTED that. I actually cried when I find out I didn't make it.

Well, if your heart is just not into it then don't feel obligated to do it just because you made "the cut".

If I were in that situation where I wasn't into it AND it would hurt one of my good friends if I went through with it, the answer would be a no-brainer.
