I have had this theory for years...i have always believed this, except I don't believe we are cancer, I believe Humans are parasites on the earth, using up it's resources, and then moving to another. I do not believe humans were created on earth, I believe they have been around for Trillions of years, and were on various other galaxies, and as they went to each one, using all their rescources, and Earth is just another one of their stops before we move somewhere else.

    Peace and Love,
    Dan

^^I don't know about all that, but yeah, I can see us as a parasite. More often than not, we're living off the misfortunes of others, including earth.

Well, regardless of weird outer space ideas on human evolution....

Cancer is a parasite, just comes from the body of the host, instead of invading from outside. The cells just start dividing uncontrollably, and leach off nutrients from the body that would otherwise go to real tissue cells. Read the article, it explains it all better than I can and draws so many comparisons that it sounds a lot more like cancer than just an invader. The homogenization of the biosphere, fluid drainage, hardening of the surface (cities), vascularization and the death of the center of the city (as in tumors)...etc.

That's exactly how I feel, we've taken over mother earth and are destroying her, it's the same as an infection taking away somebodys arm, somebodys brain, and soon enough their body. I do believe she can stop us, though, if she feels its ultimately necessary. She's got volcanos, tornados, tidal waves, etc

I believe that we are parasites, definitely... But, I know that the Earth will be around, long after we have made ourselves extinct. Then She will heal...

I'm glad that some people are still optimistic about our Earth's future...
I keep getting this feeling, like spiritually, that the ends heaps closer than we think.

Is it just me or is more bad stuff happening lately?

In Tasmania there are these old-growth forests called "The Styx". I've been there, really incredibly beautiful. It has the second tallest trees in the world. And most importantly, they haven't been fully explored. its one of the only places left in the world that hasn't been "humanised" .

The government is going to woodchip them all and send them to Japan.

im feeling what you guys are saying
i wrote this in writers craft a couple of months ago its kinda in the middle but you get it:

Due to 'civilization' and 'development' this forest has lost its vibrant smile. Cut back, this ancient place becomes a gem, an emerald in a city of concrete and steel. I sit here thinking what would this forest be like if we hadn’t tainted it? If we hadn’t come, and with us our harsh brutality? I also wonder what is to happen next to this forest of the children. I sit here trying to soak up every bit of energy I can. Tomorrow or the day after this forest might be gone. The trees weep with the knowledge that they have lost. In this game that they, that I have unwillingly been playing we have both lost. What shall I do without my ancient mother? What shall we all do when it is all over? I have lost my wise old mother. Children to come have lost a friend they never had the chance to love. Even the winners, even the ones that have played the game well will lose, for in the end we shall all lose.
    people aren’t necessarily the virus
the system, corporations, machines are the virus
we must not continue down the path we are on
for if we do it will be our own downfall
    ~peace and love
    save our mother earth

We are not a cancer exactly. Eventually we will make the world unfit for human existance but some other more robust creatures will survive and the earth will continue on from there. So we are like a cancer that devistates the body, then kills itself and then lets the body heal, which isn't like a cancer at all.

I'm with jivre. We are not a cancer, just merely a species overstepping our bounds. All species will, if allowed. The earth will not allow us to do so for much longer. Oil has increased our carrying capacity. The discovery and use of fossil fuels has allowed the earth to support more humans.
Populations of all species fluctuate with carrying capacity. Ours will too. Then we will all be forced to live sustainably.

good thread, good reading, i think about this quite often myself, i believe mankind is irreparably hurting the planet, well not totally irreparable, i guess

Well, what is cancer but cells overstepping their bounds, growing with no regard to the whole?

Maybe all species would if they could, but it really doesn't happen because there are checks, things are balanced near the equilibrium. Humans just do whatever we want, we've removed most of the checks with technology. The funny thing is we know it's bad for us, and we have the ability to solve the problems. But we don't....

we are not cancer. we are just another species on earth.

that's how nature works - species, societies, etc grow until something stops them and something will eventually stop human growth, as can be evidenced already by declining population growth in western countries.

from an evolutionary standpoint, the basic goal of any lifeform is to proliferate and get the genes into the next generation, and from this standpoint, this is exactly what every species does, including humans - but wait - since humans have the forethought to alter their behavior, humans practice things such as birth control and population control in general. if we were a "lower" level species, we would have already eaten up and destroyd the earth with an endless population growth.

how many cancers do you know that practice birth control?

humans have more intellectual potential than arguably any other species, and therefore the human scope and reach will certainly be wider. if humans were a said "cancer" then i think it's safe to say earth would already be dead. however, it is not, nor do i really believe it ever will be - i think humans will die out long before the earth does.

fortunately, there are many environmentalists in the world. and through positive developments, i think the human impact on the environment can be reduced. it will never be stopped anymore than the impact of the growth of any species. i can think of a much more constructive outlook on the environment than to sit around calling humans cancer.

somehow, i can't really see that having a positive effect. :p

Just because we are intellectual does not mean we are not some form of parasite or even cancer, we are just a higher form of that known virus, that is able to study science and is able to control things that natue causes...

the definiton of parasite is, to the best of my knowledge without going to dictionary.com, using up a host's resources without any benefits to the host and then moving on to another host.

if you're going to loosely assert that humans are a parasite, exactly how are tigers not parasites? moose? fish?

no species makes an effort to extend the livelihood of the earth - except, well, certain humans, who actually do attempt to control their behavior.

i see the analogy as unacceptable, and a really great way to piss people off into not listening when you try to explain the environmental problems. "hey, you're a parasite, come listen to me tell you what all you're doing wrong and how we should fix our planet!" yes i can imagine that being very constructive.

Sometimes you have to take an extreme position to make a point. A great number of the effects of human civilization are exactly like cancer. By bringing this to attention, one might shock people enough to make them hear the rest. Because while all life has it's impact, humans are having such a disproportionate and disasterous impact that it's not something we should just dilly dally over. It is becoming imperitive that we change things, soon. If it takes a shocking argument, then so be it.
