This isn't really a political topic, but I guess it sort of is. Every now and then, I run into someone who is just so stupid and so ignorant and so evil that I just want to strangle them violently. They use terms like 'liberal mumbo jumbo' and talk about how really simple idealistic ideas 'would never work in the real world', because they are apparently the leading authorities on how the world works. They never actually talk about 'how the world works', they just tell you that they know better than you do because it's how they get to win the argument. If you actually try to talk to them, they'll pull out the old 'liberal mumbo jumbo' thing, and completely ignore what you've said-- because they are stupid. They feel like they are entitled to everything they have and that not only is buying a huge-ass gas guzzling car their god-given right, but it's actually more important than saving an impoverished family in another country, or leaving a halfway decent planet for their grandchildren. In Canada, they are concentrated in the province of Alberta. They are aggressive, stupid, and closed-minded. They get more upset about the media badmouthing conservatives than they do about chemical companies covering up ecological disasters in foreign countries. Sorry, I'm just venting, but it's like if only some sort of horrible tragedy would wipe these people off of the face of the Earth, everything would be just peachy for everyone.
I heard that, I have been up against this type for years.Their outlook seems to be "I'm rich,so I must be right".
Yah, they piss me off, and they tend to view everyone in terms of political stereotypes. The really religious ones, I can't argue with, because they live in their own reality. At least communists have a certain logic about them, but they really don't.
Fun fact, the progressive conservative party currently holds 72 out of 83 seats in Alberta's parliament.
I was recently disowned by a close family member. Why? Because I made the mistake of saying peace is a better solution than war. I hear you. Big time. QP
Eh, I've met too many closed-minded and full of shit liberals on here to hate the conservatives too much. They are way more likely to be completely ignorant; but I don't find them any more likely to be rude, arrogant, or closed minded.
oh I am so sick of seeing those types... I agree, I wanna throttle them. Its like their minds are completely closed off to reason and rationale.
I'm not sure of the Canadian perspective, but in the UK context [the Conservative party now being back in the driving seat here] I guess it'd be one with forward thinking ideas - like maybe allowing women the vote [so long as they put their X where their husband, father or other male guardian tells them to].
I would think a progressive conservative is someone who is progressive in a social sense of looking ahead and moving forward - but conservative in economical senses, current political conventions (whether constitutional or otherwise), but I don't know it in the Canadian sense and am about to wiki it
As for the progressive conservative, that may be a synonym for Libertarian. Hating conservatives? That's your right, but if you hate them and they hate you and both of you just shout at each other, it's a verbal pissing contest. Kind of pointless. Sure a lot of them are mindless sheep, but if you can ever find an influential articulate conservative who has no hidden agenda (some corporation is paying him big bucks to BS the public), then you have a shot at showing him a better way. I think that there's a secondary struggle between ideologues and pragmatists on both sides. You have to show a conservative that there are limits to dog-eat-dog economics. If they are not too much a brain-washed ideologue, you may actually win him over to some extent to your way of looking at social and economic justice.
Excellent post and to add there are also pragmatic limits to idealism which need to be kept in mind by the far left much the same. But I really doubt we'll ever do away with the negative extremes on either side of that pasture fence eh'? :cheers2:
i've experienced the same frustrations. i try to remember, though, that it is pointless to argue with an idiot b/c you have to bring yourself to their level. just feel bad for them and move on.
It should be capitalized. "Progressive Conservative" is the name of the ruling party, originally formed from the amalgamation of the Progressives and the Conservatives. They are no longer in the least bit progressive - they are the extreme redneck party. At the federal level, they officially dropped the "Progressive" part of the name a few years ago. Fun fact #2 about Alberta politics: There has been exactly ONE change of government there in the last 75 years. And while we are on the subject of party names and rednecks, there is our own ruling party in British Columbia. The same rednecks that run Alberta call themselves "Liberals" here. They couldn't get elected under their own name, so they took over a party with a more electable name. The only thing that offends me more than their policies is their dishonesty.
