because they go to places where the tribes live in peace with their own Gods. why do you need to convert people? why are you so damn sure of yourselfs? ever heard of live and let live? Christianity brings shame to those who feel natural in their own skins, who live well in their own ways that have been there for thousends of years. please, just stop sending people to preach to people who live happily in their own way just as you would not like it if people came to your land with ideas you don't agree with and forced them on you. blessings xxx xx x
I've long had a problem with this. It has brought disease into tribal areas where they have no resistance to the outside stuff. And the culture shock is something else. We make people want to be just like us. The medical help is fine. Even schools and soup kitchens, fine. But get with the program. Forget what you worshipped before. Forget about the old days. You're reborn now. Sinners go to hell you know. x
who exactly are you bitching at? im not aware the missionaries "force" christianity of people. they give them something to think about. also, if someone camed to my land i would listen to what they had to say with both ears and an open heart. if i didn't agree, i would go on with my life. if people feel shame in their ways after they hear the word of christ, then maybe they need some changing no? why would they feel shameful, if what they do is ok?
i am just very very against converting people. leave people to their lives. i am "bitching" at christians thinking they are right all the time, and i know there are many many people who would agree with me. we should be cherishing the few tribal people left in this world, they have a wisdom we lost a long time ago. blessings xxx xx x
In the old days, Christian missionaries went along with the colonial armies and participated in the rape and plunder of indigenous people, subjugating them, destroying their culture and stealing their land, for the glory of the Christian God. Thus was born the term, "missionary" style when it comes to sex, due to Christian priests, raping the indigenous women and girls, all in the name of God, of course.
well I'm sure the history book has you all pissed, and rightfully so. But the problem is not christianity or the ideas of a missionary. The problem is the attitude of individuals, it always has been and always will. We'd do well to remember: "and if they shall not have you, knock the dust off your shoes as you leave..." Not all missionaries are evil rapists. Just as not all Brits are colonizing wankers And be careful at how you idealize tribal culture as well. They have all the problems and then some that society now has. Not that your points are incorrect, but you're approaching the whole thing with blanket statements of outrage and indignation, instead of the tolerance and love you're professing.
BS...source it. Kinsey was the first to use the term "missionary position". It has been depicted in art from ancient countries such as China and India. Apparently the term was accutally coined by the Trobrianders (whom anthropologist Malinowski studied) to make fun of missionaries becaus ethe islanders prefered a different style of sex... Priest, Robert J.. Current Anthropology, Feb2001, Vol. 42 Issue 1, p29-68, 40p pwn'd!!!!! :H
My favourite missionary was Jean de Brebeuf. He was a Jesuit who converted a whole bunch of Hurons, but the Iriquois wouldn't have it, so they killed him--then they ate his heart cause he was so brave. His Huron companion even turned on him... Poor guy, guess he wasn't that good of a missionary Who are your favourite missionaries? :H
They do not "force" it is most occasions, but there are definitly some that use coercion to get people to do things. Withholding food and aid unless they are baptized and attend church, those types of things. Even mother Teresa is accused of such acts. (And who knows how much we can trust this account) but it seems Che Guevara had similar encounters while in the Amazon basin at leprosy colonies
the same could be said for christians, you profess love for your naighbour, yet you go to Iraq to kill them! all right fine i will come out with it, i am against most christians, you don't see the wrong you have done, you don't apologize for all the ill doing in your past. and yes i know you are all going to have a go at me, because god is on your side ect, but what you believe makes no sense to alot of people, blind faith is not enough. it is wrong to convert, end of. blessings xxx xx x
im not going to have a go at you. rather, i am going to inform you that I have never been to iraq to kill anyone, i didn't go on the crusades, i've never killed anyone in the name of my God, and i have never forced someone to convert to my religion. if you dont want to get flammed, then stop making blanket statements. what if i found out your ancestry and judged you based on all the terrible things your people have done in past. (which im sure w/e you are, i could find something). stop judging everyone based on all the bad things you've heard. everything is a balance, and christianity has done enormous good in our world also. and if someone wanted to convert, why is this bad?
I think this statement illustrates exactly why you're so upset. Just because george bush and his republican shills claim to be christian doesn't mean he represents every christian in the world, or that his actions have anything to do with the faith he claims to have. Backtrack to the missionary hatred... get some critical thinking skills. You seem to have all the logic and knowledge in the world when it comes to deconstructing religions and entire groups of people who follow them, yet can't apply them when the results are inconclusive or against something you've already decided. The tenants of a faith should not be based on the actions of its participants. Your actions here are no better than those people that beat the bible in order to justify the hatered of other people. Why focus on negativity and hatred instead of love and peace? It goes farther than any specific religion really. People are acountable for their actions, not any of the groups that they are a member of; ethnic, "racial", spiritually, socialy, etc etc.
right, see all i wanted to do with this thread was show you that i feel that the main concept of missionaries is wrong to me. looking back, i think i should have just posted a reply somewhere. blessings xxx xx x
I agree with you- the idea that one should spread their religion to everyone, regardless of their belief system is rediculous. Especially when it is taught as the only "True" way. Plus, I find the Christian idea that all those who don't believe in Christ are destined to hell quite disturbing. I guess that's why I like Buddhism- Buddhists are only supposed to explain their belief system to those who ask about it and never w/ the intentions of "converting" someone. Peace and love
ah at least someone agrees with me thanks the true way thing, i think that is very mistaken. i was a buddhist for 2 years, and even tho i am a pagan now, i still hold alot of respect for the buddhist way. blessings xxx xx x
I never disagreed with your main idea really, just the method in which you communicated it. The "conversion" ideal is largely politically motivated rather than drawn on lessons from the actual scripture.
