ahh I just read about it, figured I'd warn any hippy looking travelers here.

 

Thailand has an endemic opium/weed problem. Hippies are only bound to worsen the situation, in theory anyway.

 

very strict on drugs, offically. in reality, not so much. it's just for them to have an excuse to get a bribe or kick someone out/deny them entry on some vague rule, lots of the travellers there have quite the "hippy appearance."

 

I ditched my hippy clothes after I had my first baby. Now I wear mom clothes. Cut my hair, too. It used to be past my ass. now it doesn't even touch my shoulders.

yeah, i do think this would probably be the biggest reason. if i'm not mistaken i've also read you can be deported for things like sleeping on a beach and such if you're a foreigner.

 

they need a sign stating no single middle aged men then.. help them with their underaged prostition problem.

 

I feel like I have to say something here as I am currently living in Thailand.

A lot of these so called 'rules' are there, but rarely, if ever enforced. The idea that Thailand has an epidemic opium/weed problem is particularly outdated. Outside of the over-touristed south, the drug problems are minimal. Opium production has been all but quashed in a successful crop-substitution program implemanted by his Majesty King Bhumipol.

I would suggest that there are way more foreigners who come to Thailand looking to use drugs than there are Thai citizens who use them. The association of 'hippies' with said drugs was one of the reasons for the original laws.

The border situation here is always changing but if you are crossing a land border, especially fromBurma or Laos(the real drug producers), it pays to look kinda respectable to lessen the chances of attention from sometimes bored or over-zealous border guards looking to spice up their day.

Apart from some strange looks from people in rural areas, who consider it quite impolite to look scruffy, you would get little or no other attention from anybody for your appearance.

 

I want to go see for myself. I was talking to a guy i work with from Thailand yeserday and he said Thai girls would love me, so I came home broke up with my girlfriend and bought a one way ticket.

Luckily I think the wost thing about hippies are hippy clothes and style, so you know even the border guards will love me

 

If you are tall, white and rich, certain Thai girls will love you long time, if that is what you are looking for.
