If you started a month ago, you're still in the first semester, right? Well, don't you have to take the basic (read: annoying) classes?

Hopefully you'll do better when you're taking classes you're intersted in.

Sorry this wasn't much help, for I am not in college.

Have you talked to whoever it is in the administration that deals with handicaps (in the US that would be the ADA office, but I don't know who you go to in Canada)? They can help you get whatever help you need -- testing modifications or whatever -- to compensate for the dyslexia.

I would also suggest going to the advising center -- at least at the universities I've been to, they tend to offer programs for new students to help with study habits and whatnot (different methods work for different people, maybe something you haven't thought of might help you do better)...

But, if you really hate it, why are you there? I mean, is that just an expression of frustration or are you wasting your time? If you really just don't want to be there, that might be the biggest part of the problem (I have a hard time focusing on things I hate to do!). Have you considered other options, even just taking a year off to figure out what it is you really want for yourself?

Well, if you want to stay in college -- but don't have a major in mind yet -- I would recommend just taking some of the basic courses that you'll need regardless. Or, if for some reason ya need to declare, go liberal arts or something that transfers well.

Otherwise? Just finish up this semester as best you can and than take some time off to get your head straight.

I did kind of what you did.. I went to college, but not because I had any desire to really, just because everyone around me made it seem like that's the only way to become successful. They're wrong. They're are plenty of other alternatives and you're only 18, so you have plenty of time to try stuff out, mess up, and try something new. I know it seems like the "end of the world", but lots of kids start off bad in college -- it takes sometime to get used to. And hell, I'm 4 years older than you and I still don't know what I want to do with the rest of my life -- and I know folks that are well into their 30s and are still searching. You've got time.

Depending on the college you're at, they may even have people you can talk to about this stuff. A friend of mine was studying graphic design, but about half way through started to doubt if he really wanted to be "type-setting" for the rest of his life.. he talked to a career counselor and she set him up with other schools doing animation and digital cartoons.

If you're having trouble with any of your courses, you can usually schedule time with your professors -- I found, unlike my highschool teachers, most of my college professors where more than happy to lend a hand.

    Stay sane! :)

I took a year off after graduation, then went back to school at a convenient university nearby. It seemed good enuf, and I didn't know what else to do at the time. I went for a whole year, then dropped out. I wasn't happy there -- didn't like the school, didn't like the classes I took, just generally didn't want to be there. So I took more time off. I lived with a boyfriend while working crappy restaurant jobs. We broke up so I followed the rainbow family around for a bit (knowing I could go home to my dad's place whenever I was ready). I had graduated in 96, finally in 2001 I decided I was ready to give college a try again. Instead of going to a commuter college in a big city, this time I tried a large university in a mid-sized college town. Different environments work better for different people. But, the point is, taking more time off is not that big of a deal.

Yeah, I had crap jobs during my time off because I knew I would go back to school before too long, so why go for any type of "career"? But, when are you ever going to have this much freedom to goof off ever again? Now you only have to worry about supporting yourself. And, if you decide college is not for you, there are plenty of alternatives you could look into -- anything from massage therapy training to some vocational tech school.

I personally encourage everyone with any interest in it whatsoever to go to college, so don't take my comments as if I have anything against academia. I just graduated with my BA this past May and will be starting grad school in a couple of weeks. But, I wouldn't have done nearly as well as I did if I hadn't taken the time off to figure out what I want.

Of course, if you decide you want to stay in school now, but you're just not sure which direction to go in, Ganja_Goo_Ninja made some really good suggestions. At my school, the advising center has aptitude tests that you can take to see what area might suit you best, as well as all kinds of other material to help you figure out what to focus on. And, most undergrads change their major something like 4-5 times on average. So don't feel like you're completely stuck with the first thing you choose.

What this all really comes down to is putting everyone else out of your thoughts for a bit, and figuring out what you want for yourself. It doesn't matter what mom, dad, best friend, aunt, uncle, etc. wants you to do. In the end you have to do what makes you happy, regardless of what they think is best. All the advice in the world can't tell you which direction to go in. The best you're going to get here are options, not answers.

it is a small building has like 8 class rooms..

it teaches 7 courses.. I chose the social work course, it is 12 months long.
    this school costs 17 Grand...

    here are the courses:
nursing, social working, assistant living, gerontology, computer science, pharmacy technician, or travels agent..

I'm right there with you. I don't know how long it will take either of us to find our place, but I know its out there somewhere.

Btw, being smart doesn't really help you find direction. If anything I am more confused because of my intelligence (not to toot my own horn.) I suspect your confusion could be the result of frustrated talent you haven't found a use for yet.

Hell...I have a sociology background. If you know anyone whos hiring illegal immigrants I'll move to BC and help you study.

Hey Shadow D, let's take it one step at a time...

    1) Figure out what you want (for now at least). You rock w/ animals. Ever think about veterinary medicine? Marine biology? Wildlife photographer?

    2) If your school doesn't offer what you want, consider a different school.

    3) If NO school offers what you want, screw em. Diplomas are overrated.

Famous people who failed/dropped out of school:
    Albert Einstein
    Thomas Edison
    Sophia Loren
    Ted Turner
    Cher
    Lucille Ball
Sean Connery (sorry... Sir Sean Connery)
    Bill Gates
    etc
    etc
    etc

Maybe you should spend time figuring out what you like to do and then take those kind of classes instead.

Dude, i was commenting on how shadowd make a genuine thread looking for genuine replies, then u walt in here and make a smartass comment. She tells you to fuck off, then u get super defensive and you tell her not to take this so seriously when u instigated it.

Good for you for being still in school.. just like the many thousands of other students in the world. As far as i can tell, almost everyone has a job while they're studying. I work 2 jobs, volunteer at a third, and am studying a double degree at university - i am in my second year. Also, i have worked since i was 15, paying for my own tuition right through til now. It's common, so get over yourself.

Getting back to the topic, if you are interested in zoology/conservation - is there a zoo/wildlife park/wildlife reserve or anything along those lines nearby? See if they have volunteering positions there, or any kind of position there that you could fill. Those kinds of places do some 'on-the-job' training, and the more you learn the higher position you'll reach.. like.. working your way up through the ranks. And it's practical stuff, not just the theory that you read in textbooks. It mmight be more your kind of thing? Just a thought.

Hey sista shadowd, I am 23 and I would absolutely love to be going to school right now. Just can't afford it or get a loan till I'm 24, but N E way if you don't want to be learning about something that you' re supposedly going to be doing till you retire or what ever then I seriously suggest you take sometime to figure out what it is that interests you. At the age your at you go back and forth on what you want to be alot. So you really shouldn't make a commitment to something that your just not sure about. As far as everyone pushing you to be a social worker, remember weather you become one or not really doesn't effect them at all, it only effects you. Alot of people do drop out of school when they're 18, but I hope you don't. It is so important now to be educated in something, but don't comprimise your future happiness over it. Find something that you truely love. Best of Luck:)

I am also dyslectic but reading is one of my favourite spare time activities. Some scientist in the UK says that dyslectic persons should wear coloured glasses. He says that it’s better for their reading ability. Come on girl, keep spirits up!
