I can't believe the amount of time wasted playing video games. 6 to 10 hours a day by a lot of kids....who are still doing it as adults.

Usually an hour...sometimes two. But socializing is different than wasting time in fantasy land.

My first thought too. Ever since I took notice of video games a lot of them were about killing/beating enemies in one form or another. People only started to really worry once graphics improved a lot :p (well and since they noticed some peeps spend too much time on them, but that is another thing imo)

I am the same about stamp collecting or people that love puzzling (putting a cutted up picture together) and collecting said puzzles. Among others things. I guess these particular forms of entertainment just doesn't appeal to us. Your guess is pretty funny but nonsensical. Should a fanatic book reader become a writer in order to not waste time?

In the US, as far as I remember, ever since video games were able to represent blood they have stirred controversy. For instance, in regards to Mortal Kombat, the Super Nintendo port of the original had grey 'sweat' instead of blood and they changed some of the fatalities too. I also think Nintendo was hesitant to port Doom and Duke Nukem caused some controversy for violence and obscenity.

Video games were to blame by the media in a couple infamous incidents involving youth violence as well, such as the shootings at Columbine.

I'm for wholesome fun, but video games are always violent. It's like there isn't that much you can really do about it other than not play. Some of the games are fun, but they do involve killing. One example is Far Cry 4.

I guess here in our part of Europe as well, but it really seemed to start getting more attention and a bigger crowd that's concerend about it when the graphics and games as a whole developed a lot. I can remember a lot of drama especially about Carmageddon here and later played a very shitty zombie version of it on the N64. The original on pc was the shit at the time :D

Yeah but how useful is that? I see it a bit the same as when Ozzy Osbourne got blamed for some kid's suicide just because he listened to a song with that theme.

I'm sure it's useful as justifications to organizations promoting censorship and rating labels, but it's probably just a means for the media to provide a scapegoat and get a story out without having to really examine the case thoroughly.

Perhaps contrary to what this thread seems to suggest, it seems since 9/11 and perhaps in part the increase in interconnective games for consoles and PC, displacing video games to social ills in society seems less common, certainly not as 'loud' as it once was.

    random tangent trivia.

The game Command & Conquer Generals: Zero Hour was delayed in release by about 6 months because one of the campaign scenarios was terrorists flying planes into the world trade center.
They had to make some significant changes to the game storyline and also the cover art as it depicted planes crashing into the world trade center.

    Weird shit, huh?

    oops, I goofed, it was C&C Red Alert;

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_entertainment_affected_by_the_September_11_attacks#Video_games

The 2000 computer game Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2, depicting an alternate history where the Soviet Union launches an invasion of the United States, changed its box art after the attacks. The original art was a fold-out cover. The inside depicted the New York skyline on fire including a ruined Twin Towers with flames and smoke emitting out. The cover depicted a Soviet soldier who was wearing an eyepiece with crosshairs on the American flag. The altered cover merely depicted the Soviet soldier wearing the eyepiece with crosshairs on a nuclear bomb explosion. The release of its 2001 expansion pack, Command & Conquer: Yuri's Revenge, was postponed because of this. Controversial in-game levels, including ones where players had to destroy the Pentagon and attack the World Trade Center area, were not changed, however the landmarks and level names like "Operation: Big Apple" were no longer mentioned in walkthroughs on the game's website.

this little futile "video games cause violence" BS has been going on for a long time...when people get shot up in schools and in theaters, they gota have a patsy to blame it on and violent video games fits the bill...even though there have been studies showing the correlation between video games and violence DOESNT FUCKING EXIST...ive been gaming since i was a wee lad, i havent killed anyone or beat people up because mortal kombat or doom told me to...now if youll excuse me, im gonna go cry into my beer about something that actually matters...

I wonder if they used to complain about the senseless taking of pawns back during the Gupta Empire too?

Certainly when it was senseless, Fritz! It sometimes got the audience riled up til no end. They also complained about the lack of gore, which they found completely unrealistic and kind of dehumanizing ;)
