I don't expose myself to advertising... am I weird?

I just thought I'd ask the people on here for an honest opinion because everyone I know in real life thinks I'm weird!

I refuse to watch TV commercials (I especially object to having adverts playing while I'm doing something else), or go in shops where they're playing adverts over the loudspeakers (especially very quiet adverts that you can barely hear).

I have two reasons for this:

    1. First and foremost, I value my mind, and if there's any slight chance that I could be being brainwashed by my subconscious taking in commercial messages then I'd rather not take that risk.

    2. Second, I don't think spending any amount of time watching/listening to advertising is wholesome. It's one thing if you're looking for a new TV so you buy a TV magazine and look through the adverts to find something that you want, but sitting watching nothing but adverts for a few minutes is such a waste of your life.

    Consider this:
If you watch 2 hours' TV a day, and you sit through the adverts, then you will have spent half an hour each day watching adverts. So every year you're spending more than a week watching adverts. So in your whole lifetime of say 70 years you've spent one and a half years doing nothing but watching adverts!

Anyway, that's my reasons. Do you think I'm weird?

I don't think your weird. I don't have a television and I don't listen to the radio. People say I'm clueless about when movies come out since I never know. You have your reasons and my view, they are pretty valid.

I watch one hour of television a week.

I almost always have to leave the room when the ads come on or turn the volume down and do sit-ups or something to distract myself.

What do you do..., avert your eyes when the commercials come on or something?

I don't think you're weird but you could come across as a wee bit paranoid if you're out with friends and some commercials come on and youve got your fingers in your ears & your eyes squeezed shut.......Lol:)

No, I don't "avoid" the adverts, I just don't watch them. I use a PVR to record everything I watch on TV, so the adverts are always skipped.

It's very rare I find myself in the situation of being in front of someone else's TV, but if I am then I make a point of concentrating on what the adverts are saying.

I don't think you're wierd. If you flipped and kicked your TV in whenever an advert came on then maybe, but not wanting to waste time watching Insurance adverts then it's fair enough.

Y'know what, I wish I was less lazy so I could get up off my ass and change the channel when there's adverts.

I find it a little wierd that you won't go into a shop with quiet advertisements for fear of being brainwashed. It just sounds really paranoid to me. The other stuff about not wanting to watch commercials and such, I can dig that. The whole thing about being brainwashed is just off though.

This is why they invented the remote control.

A fear of "brainwashing" seems somewhat hysterical.

Television commericals do take up a lot of tv time, and its cool you dont subject yourself to such 'torture' like brainwashing. But the televison isnt meant for the shows..its like a constant advertisment for something. the tv show your watching is just the filler for the commercials. The commercials keep the show on the air. And corportations know that ppl go get snacks during commercials, go to the washroom, etc. During the actual show you are being submitted to adverts. The main character is drinking a can of pepsi. Someones wearing a name-brand t-shirt, a certain car is being driven. Your best bet is to not watch tv at all.
However, you are being paranoid. and that makes me laugh. We are constantly being exposed to media. thats just the kind of world we live in.
Reality does not effect the media, media effects our reality.

i hate advertising and commercials. i always mute them when im watching tv or listening to radio. everytime i see a commercial i dont see the product..i see a bunch of advertising execs sitting at a round table trying to come up with the most effective way of manipulating the public into buying their product and usually it ends up being a very obnoxious and annoying commercial. a commercial has never made me want to buy anything but i have seen commercials that ive thought were just so obnoxious that ive vowed *not* to buy their product.

if u r not watching them because subconsious stuff, or brainwashing etc.

i heard that if somethings forwarded you notice the adverts because you concentrate harder, trying to find the start of the programme,

but if u doing it to save your wasted time fair enough, what do you people think is a waste of time, personally i think if your happy then its not a waste of time, the best thing i can do for people atm is educate my self on some problems and solutions,

so what do you think is a waste of time?

Yes, I do. I also think that weird is good.

Someone like you who avoids advertising might not recognize that "join the herd" is the base message of most commercials. The notion that it is bad to be weird (unique, odd, unusual, eccentric, not normal, lone wolf, etc.) is one that commercial advertising promotes.

    Be Weird! Be Proud!

    ^very true

Though i agree, it's weird (in a bad way) to refuse to enter a store that has the radio on (with ads as well as music). I mean, chill dude, subliminal messages are really weak, and are not well recieve, or stored, in one;s brain.
