Man where do I start? I feel sometimes depressed because I might never be the player I wish to be. I mean I see and talk to these very excellent lead guitar players on Youtube and talk to them on how long they been playing and they tell maybe two to three years and they play megadeth solos with easy.

I try to play almost every time I feel inspired to play but then I feel that I might not be adequate enough to be a great lead guitar player. :(

I learn all the notes in all seven modes and play them in different keys but damn I feel to genertic with my improvision. Maybe I need to take lesson from a real guitar teacher.

Also my technic is pretty clean to my ability but I lack the speed but then again am not use my metronom.

Anyone get musicans players block? Ugh....I hate it.

But like they say its a long way to the top if you want to rock n roll.

Maybe I should just drop guitar as a whole and be a fanboy.

its all in the gear.. Today my gear had me lost.. Sometimes i feel like im really in a structure.. know everything Iwant to play and I just dont.
Its funny you posted this cause I was laying down, kinda burnt from playing earlier,. eleven rack, new pa speaker, tones just take me away like a drug but it seems with all the effects and stuff. I really want to experiment on things.

I was playing some MotorHead ace of spades finding it was very very hard to maintain the speed - though its nothing more than a punk lick played by Green Day. Its just very steady and takes more control than you think it does. Unlike sailing all on the fret board allowing the sustain to play a guitar tone, Its more a horn. Thinking the string is a horn may better help your soloing..

like to type more, have a migraine atm..

I get musicians block, I haven't played the guitar in about a month. I think its always good to do exercises at least to keep your fingers nimble, I have found it more difficult to progress on the guitar when I take extended breaks as I get older.

Lessons for sure help, I only have taught blues rock guitar though, I'm guessing you're going for some serious metal guitar lessons with all the modes and harmonic scales and stuff.

The only possible advice i can reccomemd over the net is if you aren't very good with them start practicing 1/2 bends, full bends, double stop bends, reverse bends, slides, pinch harmonics, etc. To make your playing more dynamic. (I'm going to assume you already abuse hammer on and pull offs and finger tapping as a lead metal guitarist :p )

Try and play some (play with some) other types of music for a bit if you have done all that and maybe you can get inspiration and new ideas to integrate into your metal guitar playing.

I quit, but that was more due to me becoming dissatisfied with the instrument and moving on to piano.

If I were to offer some advice
    1. Branch out, explore techniques and genres not related to metal. This will help you in the long run, and it will help your improvisational ability, and it will allow you to become a more robust guitar player in general. It's important to break out of those molds we cast for ourselves. Plus, it's exciting to explore aspects of music that you normally don't consider, and it may re-invigorate your drive to further pursue guitar and become a better player. You never know when you'll stumble across something that may change your life.
    2. Practice every day. Don't practice only when you "feel inspired." Practice every single day regardless of how you feel, plan ahead of time and make practicing a part of your schedule. If you don't feel particularly inspired on a certain day then limit yourself to practicing scales and technical exercises, but it really is important to practice very routinely. I believe that in order to become great at something, you need to live and breath it, you can't just do it when you feel like it, you also do it when you don't feel like it. It becomes a labor of love.

If you continue playing you might never be great, but if you quit playing you will never be great.

Also, don't worry about greatness, that should be the last thing on your mind.
Either you love music or you love the greatness that it may bring. If you love the latter then you will never be able to dedicate yourself to the former.

true, although there is also nothing wrong with having the ambition for greatness if its born out of a true love of something.

I think it's secondary and detracts from the overall purity of expression and genuineness of soul that music should be about.
Bach is often considered the greatest composer in the history of the world and he himself wrote at the end of each piece "Soli Deo gloria", or "Glory to God alone"
I think greatness can't be pursued, because it's up to history to decide what greatness is or isn't. If the music itself is not motivation enough, then you'll never be great anyways.

Going by the text here, I would say You have no idea about the mentality of the modern day athlete. If you need a comparison in this medium, think of Kanye West who has been dubbed a genius by some and himself lol and we can possibly even include *cough* Justin Bieber *cough* aaaaaaaack who have also spoke about God's blessings.

    I.E. Muhammahed Ali:

"Im the greatest there ever will be, I said it before I knew it."

"what we do for God is all that will last."

Don't quit... I played bass for a long time and I just kinda slowly moved away from it because I was frustrated that once I got to a certain point I wasn't getting any better (which was not very good at all to begin with). I was completely self-taught so I really had no idea what I was doing, I basically just played by ear/tabs until something sounded right. Now I really regret putting it down...

I want to start again and re-learn everything CORRECTLY this time because I have a friend who is willing to help me out, but I know my lack of patience with myself will always be a challenge I have to deal with.

Sb when you learn the guitar/bass is just a repeating mathematical formula it gives you tons more freedom with the instrument. Bass is easier too because the 4 string doesn't involve dealing with the dreaded 'B string' of the guitar, which makes the guitar appear unsymmetrical.

It doesn't take years to do so either, maybe a month or so and then you will start on having 'AHA' moments of realization that make you realize the setup is fairly simple. Technique and adding dynamic to your playing though is more of what makes players special. Tone, effects, equipment, etc could be added to make players unique as well.

Yeah, that's the thing, I never learned scales or anything from the beginning. I can look at a fret and count up or down to tell you what note it is but that's about the best I could do. But yeah, I'm gonna just start over again from square one and do the basics first, learn actual techniques and play for real this time.
